1. Demonstrate skills required to operate as a session musician This task covers part of Unit 363 Session Musician.

Assignment You have been hired to play in a funk studio session. The session requires you to read from a pre written chart, which will include notation, chords and rhythm hits. You will be recording the track as a band (or to a pre recorded drum track) and will receive the charts the day before the session. Once in the studio you must carry yourself as a mature, professional musician. You just make sure you arrive on time (or early) for the session, with all the correct equipment and a good knowledge of the given chart so that you are prepared for any possible changes that will be made on the day. Make sure that you pay attention to any health and safety issues or protocols that the studio may have. You will be given 4 takes to get it done. Covering all of the above points will give you the best possible chance of being invited back to work with the studio again.

Tasks / Evidence / Submission Date Task 1: You must create a Presentation using Power Point assessing and discussing the implications of the following on your ability to perform effectively in the session. Make sure you include the following information in your presentation: 1. Describe the session, which you are taking part in; is it live, or studio? Is it a band recording or individual recording? Do you have any experience in this type of session? If so explain. Do you know how long you will have to get it done? Discuss some of the potential issues that could arise; How would you prefer to have the information given to you (sheet music, chord chart, verbally explained, tab etc). What would you do to make sure you could cope if it was not given to you in the way you hope? Would you bring any spares of anything? Think of some other potential issues and discuss how you could overcome them. What if you were asked to improvise in the session? What techniques would you use and why? Do some extra research for this. If you did not have to bring your own instrument what is the ideal equipment you would choose to use for the session? (Make sure it is suitable for the style). Would you take any effects? Discuss the Health and Safety implications associated with working in a recording studio. (see website for tips). What issues could occur in your specific situation and how could they be avoided? Look back at your personal goals and discuss how taking part in this session could help you achieve them. (If you wanted to improve your sight-reading maybe forcing yourself to do it at a session will help you achieve this)? Do you think there are any of your goals that you will need to achieve BEFORE you do the session? Grading Criteria D.2: Evidence clear understanding of what the performance will look and feel like, its duration and how they will engage with it in relation to their personal goals.
