Lesson Objective (s):

Review of Closed Syllables Focusing on Vowels A, I, and O Students will be able to explain what a closed syllable is and give an example of one that has A, I, or O as the vowel. Closed Syllable Review Game Self Contained Special Education Classroom of 2nd and 3rd Graders Students will be dividing into 3 different groups consisting of 3 or 4 children based on similar ability.

4 baggies containing cut up index card pieces 10 sheets of paper markers

Procedure

Complete by: 9:55, 10:20, 10:45 --> Each Group has about 25 Minutes 1. Teacher will explain to students that they will be playing a review game about closed syllables with the vowels A, I, and O. 2. Teacher will ask students what that already know about closed syllables with the letters A, I, and O. 3. Teacher will give examples of such words, (sticking to words 2 or 3 letters long), and reiterate what makes them closed: a word with 1 vowel that ends with a consonant 4. Teacher will ask if there are any questions. 5. Teacher will explain how students will play the review game: Each student will be given a baggie containing pieces of cut up index cards. On

each red card there will be 1 consonant. There will also be 3 blue index card pieces that have vowels A, I, and O written on the.

Each student will pick one red piece, one blue piece, and another red piece out of the bag.

In the order the students pick the pieces out, they will lay the pieces down so that a word is created. However, the letters picked may not always create an actual word. (ex: "rog" is not a word)

Students will sound out each letter out load so other group members can hear, and then they may say the word.

If students struggle, teacher will assist and encourage students to mimic the sounds.

Each time a student sounds out and reads their word, they will write said word down on their paper.

Then the next student will repeat the process while their group members look along and listen.

6. Students will play review game. 7. With 5 minutes left students will be asked to give one word that they made that is a closed syllable. They will sounds out each letter and say the word again. Closure: Begin by: 9:50, 10:15, 10:40

With the remaining time each student will have the opportunity to repeat one of their favorite closed syllable words that they created and explain to group members what makes a closed syllable a closed syllable. Homework and/or Announcement s: * Homework Not Applicable Students will be asked to rotate to the next group station.
