ACTION PLAN

Develop a Strong Network

Similar to many other student affairs professionals, mentors have played an instrumental
in my higher education journey. Oftentimes, their knowledge of me has allowed them to
recognize my areas for growth and move me towards my learning edge. I look forward to
maintaining those relationships and developing with the support of their professional and
personal guidance. Furthermore, I have gained an appreciation of networking, particularly
informational interviews, during my time at Loyola. The interviews and shadowing done for
classes allowed me to realize not only how small the student affairs world is, but also how open
folks are to helping one another. I have sought out conversations with many individuals over the
course of my last year. The conversations often resulted in valuable job searching advice,
supportive conversations with professionals of similar identities, and an increased network of
folks at different institutions. I plan to continue this practice, as well as seeking out professional
development events that promote a similar exchange of ideas.
Research & Evaluation
In my professional career, I also plan to explore opportunities to become involved in this
area of student affairs. The transition from psychology to higher education did not deter my
interest in research. In fact, it opened up my perspective to new methods of assessment and
evaluation. I appreciate the largely developmental outcome focus in student affairs because it
bridges my interest in psychology with my love of educational programming. The evaluation
mindset I learned from the program will be incredibly helpful, as well as the theory to practice
approach it supports. My knowledge of theory and research enables me to provide evidence for
incorporating more theory into practice. Furthermore, I have gained the skills to analyze the

research behind an approach from a critical standpoint. I hope to gain more experience in
research and evaluation as I move forward.
Self-care
Reflection has always been an essential part of self-care for me. However, my courses at
Loyola have moved me toward more critical self-reflection. I believe that if I am not doing the
personal work involved in understanding myself and my positionality, I am limiting my potential
as an educator and social justice advocate. My goal is to carve out time each day to reflect on
my day, specifically my successes and challenges. Through that process, I can affirm myself and
look for ways to improve. In addition, I plan to incorporate self-reflection and self-care through
my constantly growing reading list. Reading allows me to continue educating myself after
graduation, as well as de-stress. I have learned during this graduate program that the field is
broad, there are always opportunities to learn and grow. As I leave this program, I plan to honor
my commitment to lifelong learning. Finally, I plan to be kind to myself in the grace period
after graduation when I am looking for jobs and in any other stressful time within my career.
The times when it seems least possible to take time to re-energize and stay positive are the times
when it is most needed.
