Droichead

1. CONCISE SUMMARY OF READING

The Droichead programme requires for mandatory participation in the National

Induction Programme for Teachers (NIPT) for newly qualified teachers from
September 2012. And is a must to cooperate with the request in order for newly
qualified teachers to be recognised as a registered teacher within the guideline of
Droichead. Droichead requires newly qualified teachers to also attend twelve
workshops within a period of three years after graduation from college. Droichead
provides a supportive framework for schools. Droichead formally welcomes new
teachers into the teaching world.

Droichead is the Irish word for bridge and what Droichead does is that it creates
that bridge from student teachers to newly qualified teachers.

Droichead

welcomes newly qualified teachers into the real teaching world and makes the
transition from third level education as a student to a teacher in second level
education as comfortable and welcoming as possible on the new teacher, as this is
a very big transition for one person.

Droichead offers teachers as new professionals an unprecedented opportunity to

shape education policy that directly affects them and their colleagues. Droichead is
here to listen to the voices of all professionals that are involved in order to get a
greater insight into what is going on with teachers in and out of the class room.

Droichead realises that not every teacher is going to be the best teacher in the
world from just coming out of training as a teacher. Droichead focuses on the
development of the teachers learning rather than the perfection of the teachers
teachings.

Every school in Droichead have a professional support team (PST). This team
includes the Principal, mentors and other members of staff. The professional
support team uses the Droichead Criteria and indicators of good practice to guide
the process.

Droichead encourages mentoring and professional conversations. This conversation

involves support for the newly qualified teachers. It acts as a form of a guide for

the newly qualified teacher as help and support.

It makes the big transition

comfortable for the new teacher and shows that there is help and support in the
school to be offered in order to maturing you and your teaching, in order to make
yourself a better teacher for the rest of your life.

The Teaching Council ran Droichead as a pilot programme in 2012. The Droichead
programme is now mandatory for newly qualified teachers to take part in, in order
to become a fully qualified registered teacher with the Irish Teaching Council.
Droichead has several requirements that must be met in order to become a
qualified teacher. Such as attending works shops, completing the required number
of hours of teaching as well as following and co-operating with the Droichead
programme. With the completion of Droichead you will then become a registered
teacher with the Teaching Council which will have changed you and your
teachings for a better teacher life.

2. CRITICAL REFLECTION

As a result of reading Droichead I have found that it is of useful information as it is another

steeping stone on our paths to becoming professional registered teachers. It states in
section 5.2.7 newly qualified teachers would be required to satisfy the Droichead condition
within three years of initial registration (Council, Droichead, 2012). For example some of
the conditions for a post primary teacher are to complete three hundred hours of teaching
following the guideline of Droichead and also to attend a minimum of twelve workshops.
These requirements all give experience and knowledge that you may have not got if there
was no such thing as the Droichead programme. The information that will be gained from
these workshops and the related professionals will stand to you and will shape your
teaching for the better to educate the children of the future. This is why I feel that it is a
very important and why I agree that the author provides useful information.

On reviewing Droichead it is a document that I feel that it has several strengths and is of
great importance, as it supports and guides newly qualified teachers. Droichead makes the
transition between been the student to been the teacher more teacher friendly and allows
you to talk to other people and teachers that may by going through the same experience
as yourself as well as having a profession support team to have at hand at all times to be
able to disuses any issues or feeling that you may encounter and have difficult with. It
stated in Droichead A Guide for Schools 2015/2016that research has found that support
and assistance for beginning teachers has a positive impact on the professional practice
(Council, Droichead a guide for schools 2015/2016, 2015). This is an encouraging
statement for a young teacher to read as they enter the Droichead programme as it
focuses the person to have a good mind set from the start. It creates positive
reinforcement from the start and creates excitement for the new teacher entering into the
teaching career.

I found that the document is interesting and exciting for a young student teacher. I feel that

it is a document that was needed to be implemented into the Irish education system.
Droichead is very much like the new Junior Certification reform programme, but for
teachers. It assesses the work and identifies the areas that can be improved on and
suggests how you may go about improving (Skills, 2015). It creates summative learning for
the new teacher.

On my quest in researching for more relevant material on Droichead I came across

Englands version of Droichead, or as it is better known - Induction for newly qualified
teachers (England). Induction for newly qualified teachers (England) and Droichead have
close similarities to each other. Both documents are aimed at newly qualified teachers.
Both documents have standards that must be met as well as having to attended workshops
outside of school hours. At the end of the day both documents are there to prepare you for
teaching in the real world and for you to be the best teacher that you possibly can be in the
class room (Education, 2015).

On having completed Teaching Practice one last year and have now read Droichead I feel
that Droichead is a programme that should be introduced during the Teaching practice
stage for student teachers. Even though help and assistance was given by the co-operating
teacher I feel that Droichead would be of a massive benefit should it be introduced during
the teaching practice stage. It would be a good source of knowledge for student teachers to
gain from the very start of their teaching career. I feel that it would give more confidence to
student teachers so they know what they are doing is right or wrong and if it is wrong they
get several opinions from other people that have bucket loads of experience which they
have gained from a lifetime of teaching. I feel that Droichead is the bit that has been
missing from the professional code of conduct which does teach how you as a teacher are
meant to be the best teacher that you can be, but it does not give any sources on how you
can improve as a teacher. This is where I feel that Droichead is a document that is
welcomed with open arms to all teachers (Council, 2001).

Taking time to reflect on what I have learned from Droichead, when we are finished in third
level education after doing several years on becoming a teacher, we will still not be
registered with the teaching council. So we will not be a recognised as a teacher in the
eyes of the teaching council. I feel that this is a bit of a negative for the Droichead
programme. This is another reason that I personally feel that it would be a good thing if it
was connected to teaching practice to reduce the requirement that must be met to
complete Droichead as we would have already met and completed some of these on
teaching practice.

Droichead is going to be one of the first programmes that we will be introduced to as a

newly qualified teacher if we get a teaching job in Ireland. Droichead is a programme that
is one of great importance as it is creating the foundation on which we are to build our
teaching experience from. Droichead will have to be fully complete in order to be fully
registered by the teaching council so it will be important that we push and engage
ourselves with Droichead.
