NHS Dentistry Concerns in Ridsmouth

The MP acknowledges a problem with many dentists in the area withdrawing from providing NHS services and refusing to accept new patients under the system. The government is working urgently to ensure locals have access to NHS dental care. While dentist fees have increased in the past year, the MP suspects those forcing patients to private care may see reduced income. He includes a letter from the Department of Health on the issue and forwards the constituent's letter to the local health authority chairman to help find a new dentist in the interim.

HOUSE OF COMMONS
LONDON SW1A OAA
Mrs J Taylor
26 Dean Street
Ridsmouth
Dorset
DT6 9PK
Our Ref: JB/LP
29 th January 2004
Dear Mrs Taylor
Thank you for your letter about NHS Dentistry.
First of all, I am, of course aware of the problem of the withdrawal of NHS
dentistry by a very large number of dentists in Ridsmouth and the refusal of other
dentists who still remain within the NHS to sign on people who have been treated
in this way by their dentists.
The government has noted this situation, and the matter is being dealt with urgently
to ensure that there are dentists locally who will provide NHS services to all those
who want them. I rather suspect that the dentists who have taken this action
(despite a massive increase in fees being paid to them over the last 12 months) will
find their income shrinking rather than expanding and they may reverse their
intention to force their patients into private care.
I am enclosing a copy of a letter which I have recently received from the
Department of Health which I hope you will find useful in explaining the
governments current position.
Meanwhile, to help address your immediate position, I am sending your letter on to
the Chairman of the Family Health Services Authority who may be able to find you
another dentist.
Yours sincerely
James Bruce, M.P.
