    making many types of decisions, including investing


    and lending decisions. If the capital markets do not
    receive reliable information, investors and others lose
    confidence in the system, make poor decisions, and
    may lose a great deal of money. The external
    auditing profession helps enhance the reliability of
    information throughout the capital markets.
    Individual external auditors are asked to make
    professional and ethical judgments about the
    information provided by business organizations.
    Professional judgment and the processes used to
    make such judgments are critical to the usefulness of
    the external audit profession and to individual
    auditors as they conduct quality audits.
    Through studying this chapter, you will be able to achieve these learning objectives:
