Nursing Responsibilities for Cefuroxime

Cefuroxime is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat lower respiratory, urinary, and skin infections as well as gonorrhea, ear infections, strep throat, and tonsillitis. It works by killing bacteria. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, and rash. It is contraindicated in those with penicillin or cephalosporin allergy due to risk of cross-sensitivity. Nurses should assess for allergies, obtain cultures prior to use, educate on proper administration, monitor for side effects, and watch for dehydration if GI issues occur.
