    Monthly Memo
    Well,%we%have%a%week%under%our%belt%and%things%have%been%rather%smooth%around%here.%%Its%been%exciting%to%see%all%the% familiar%faces%and%smiles%in%the%Girst%week.%%Its%amazing%the%level%of%energy%370%students%can%bring%into%a%building!%%Ive% been%very%pleased%as%Ive%walked%through%the%building%to%see%teachers%and%students%engage%in%that%exciting%dance%of% teaching%and%learning.%%There%may%be%some%stumbles%in%our%Girst%steps,%but%well%all%get%to%know%each%other%and%Gind%a% rhythm%that%works.%%Were%looking%forward%to%it! As%I%mentioned%in%my%back%to%school%letter,%improving%communication%will%be%a%focus%of%mine%this%year.%%I%am%hoping%this% newsletter%will%provide%you%with%a%deeper%insight%into%what%is%happening%at%Walker.%%You%will%see%sections%for%PBIS%and% Curriculum%and%Instruction.%%Every%month%I%will%highlight%important%work%that%our%school%community%is%engaging%in.%%I% am%also%excited%to%introduce%a%section%called%A%Teachers%Perspective.%%Every%month%a%staff%member%from%Walker%will% share%their%thoughts%on%teaching%and%learning.%%And%dont%forget%the%dates%to%remember%section%so%you%dont%miss%any% events%taking%place%for%the%month.%%I%hope%you%enjoy%this%monthly%newsletter%and%that%it%provides%you%with%useful% information%that%further%connects%you%to%Walker%school.%%Stay%tuned%for%a%principal%webpage%which%will%be%coming%soon.     Back%to%School. September%has%always%been%my%favorite%month.%%Yes,%my%birthday%is%Sept.%25th.%%Yes,%the%leaves%begin%to%change%colors,%and% the%weather%gets%cooler.%%But%the%truth%is,%a%new%school%year%always%brings%me%a%sense%of%excitement,%happiness,%and% hope.%%I%am%proud%to%have%been%part%of%the%Walker%family%for%the%past%20+%years. Even%though%the%school%year%started%in%August,%I%am%excited%to%meet%my%new%kids%and%create%a%new%daytime%family%to% spend%my%time%with,%teach%and%learn%and%grow%with.%%I%am%happy%to%see%all%of%my%special%friends%at%Walker,%and%that% includes%my%colleagues,%past%students,%and%their%families.%%And%always,%I%am%hopeful%for%a%school%year%Gilled%with%positive% energy%about%learning%with%each%other%and%from%each%other. So%lets%get%out%the%new%school%supplies,%books,%clothes,%and%gym%shoes.%%Lets%bring%our%best%selves%to%school,%and%show% everyone%what%Walker%School%is%all%about.%

    Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports In%this%section%I%will%keep%you%up%to%date%on%our%school%wide%efforts%to%promote% positive%behavior.%%You%can%Gind%more%details%about%PBIS%on%our%school%website%in% the%Parents%section. For%the%month%of%September,%our%focus%will%be%on%teaching%safe%behaviors.%%Each% week%we%will%teach%lessons%to%students%that%address%safety%in%our%school,% classrooms,%and%at%lunch%and%recess.%%A%few%of%our%lessons%will%include%conGlict% resolution,%safely%playing%with%others,%and%how%to%use%playground%equipment% safely.%%You%can%partner%with%us%by%continuing%the%conversation%of%school%safety%at% home.%%Thank%you%for%your%support!

    Given%that%it%is%the%beginning%of%the%school%year,%I%feel%that%it%is%important%to%share%the%professional%development%plan%for% our%staff.%%Id%like%to%thank%our%Instructional%Leadership%Team%for%spending%time%over%the%summer%to%create%a%meaningful% plan%that%allows%for%learning,%application,%and%reGlection. Our%staff%will%be%focusing%on%Give%important%elements%of%instruction;%Engaging%Students%in%Learning,%Using%Question%and% Discussion%Techniques,%%Using%Assessment%in%Instruction,%Communicating%with%Students,%and%Demonstrating%Flexibility% and%Responsiveness.%%These%elements%of%instruction%are%part%of%a%rubric%we%use%to%evaluate%instruction%in%our%district.%% Throughout%the%year%our%staff%will%engage%in%an%article%study%around%these%instructional%components.%%We%will%meet%in% groups%to%discuss%the%content%of%these%articles%and%reGlect%upon%our%competencies%in%these%areas.%%This%time%will%allow% teachers%to%share%strategies%and%develop%new%ideas%for%their%instructional%planning%and%classroom%environment.%%I%know% our%staff%is%excited%and%Im%proud%of%our%commitment%to%continue%growing%as%professionals. As%the%year%progresses%I%will%keep%you%updated%on%important%work%we%take%on%as%a%staff%as%well%as%the%work%our%students% are%engaging%in.%
