Pnss

PNSS (0.9%) is an isotonic solution ordered at 1 liter at 30 gtts/min IV to replace fluid loss. It has the same concentration of solutes as plasma so it remains in the extracellular fluid compartment, increasing intravascular volume without causing cells to shrink or swell. Nursing implications include checking the doctor's order, regulating the IV flow rate, monitoring vital signs and intake/output, and watching for signs of fluid overload.

Side Effects Redness, pain, or swelling at the insertion site

Nursing Implication Before: -Check doctors order. During: -Regulate the flow rate as ordered. After: -Check vital signs frequently. -Monitor intake and output and pt. Daily. Watch closely for signs and symptoms of fluid overload.

With osmotic Fluid pressure replacement constant both therapy inside and outside the cells, the fluid in each compartment remains within its compartment and cell neither shrink or swell. Because isotonic solutions have the same concentration of solutes as plasma, it does not move into the cell. Rather it remains within the ECF compartment and is distributed between intravascular and interstitial spaces, this increasing the intravascular volume.
