The first schools to offer the two new subjects of Leaving Certificate Drama, Film and Theatre Studies and Leaving Certificate Climate Action and Sustainable Development have been named.
Some 100 post-primary schools have been chosen to introduce the new courses from next September.
A total of 57 schools have been selected for Leaving Certificate Drama, Film and Theatre Studies and 43 have been chosen for Leaving Certificate Climate Action and Sustainable Development.
Minister for Education Norma Foley said there had been "a strong level of interest from schools of all types across the country in taking part in this first phase".
Teachers in the selected schools will begin working with the state teacher support service Oide this year, one year in advance of teaching the subject.
The Department of Education has said that all selected phase one schools will be provided with the necessary resources to establish new subject departments in their schools and to support the teaching and learning of the subject from the start of the 2025/26 school year.
In Drama, Film and Theatre Studies students will have the opportunity to cultivate informed thinking through learning supported by creative and critical processes.
Climate Action and Sustainable Development will develop students' capacity for informed and meaningful action for a just and sustainable world.
The schools who will lead the introduction of the new subjects include Synge Street CBS Secondary School in Dublin whose patrons announced last week that it was to become a co-educational Gaelcholáiste starting from 2026.
It is one of five Dublin schools - two fully state-funded and three fee-charging - that will offer Drama and Theatre Studies from next September.
