O'Connor, who passed away last July and MacGowan, who died last November, both had a huge impact on music, both in Ireland and globally, and the show aims to play tribute to their legacy.
The two singers first met a party for The Pogues in London in 1986 and memorably dueted on a version of The Pogues song Haunted in 1995.
The Sinéad and Shane concert will take place on 20 March and will also feature Cat Power, The Mountain Goats, Amanda Palmer, Bettye Lavette, Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hutz, Julia Cumming, Kat Edmonson, and the Resistance Revival Chorus singing and playing songs by O’Connor and MacGowan.
David Gray said, "Last year we bid farewell to two rare talents in Sinéad O'Connor and Shane MacGowan. There can be no doubt that their fierce songs and unforgettable voices will live on forever in the hearts of everyone who heard them.
"Come March 20th I’ll be flying out to New York City to join a whole host of fantastic artists at Carnegie Hall for a unique celebration of their music, all proceeds to PEN AMERICA. Why not come and join us and add your voices to the choir."
Posting on Instagram, Boston Irish band Dropkick Murphys said: "We’re honored to announce that we’ll be performing at A ST. PATRICK’S CELEBRATION of SINÉAD O’CONNER SHANE MACGOWAN on MARCH 20 at Carnegie Hall in NYC."
All proceeds from the gig will go to PEN America, a nonprofit organization raising awareness for the protection of free expression, and tickets are on sale on 22 January as a range of different packages including "Transmetropolitan", "Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah", "A Pair of Brown Eyes" and "Nothing Compares 2 U".
More acts for the show will be announced in the coming weeks.
