Dancing with the Stars champion Carl Mullan has told the Ryan Tubridy Show on RTÉ Radio 1 about his struggle with self-confidence.

The RTÉ 2FM presenter was joined on the show on Monday morning by his professional dance partner Emily Barker and fellow finalists Damian McGinty and Kylee Vincent and Brooke Scullion and Robert Rowiński.

Describing Sunday night's final on RTÉ One as "the first show I truly enjoyed" and "the least nervous I've been the whole time", Mullan began by paying tribute to his fellow finalists Suzanne Jackson, Damian McGinty and Brooke Scullion.

He said he was "very close to saying no" to Dancing with the Stars before his wife convinced him otherwise.

"Honestly, it sounds like it's made up, I really learned so much about myself doing it. It's such an intense process," he told the host.

"I didn't really realise how inwardly I struggled with my own confidence. Outwardly, people think I'm a very confident person, which I am - you know, I can go into a room, I can chat to people. But every single week on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Emily would be the one having to be saying, 'I know you can do this. You're able to do this'."

When asked what was the "greatest thing" he learned during his time on Dancing with the Stars, Mullan replied: "For me, it was to kind of trust the process and to back myself."

"I am a case in point that if you practise enough at anything, you can get to where you need to be," he added.
