MAUMEE — Lexington pulled a stunning upset in Friday night’s Division III, Region 10 football playoff opener at Maumee.

The 12th-seeded Minutemen shocked the fifth-seeded Panthers 28-14 at Maumee High School.

Lex used a 30-yard TD run to jump on top 7-0 in the first quarter, and a 1-yard plunge made it 13-0 early in the second period. But the Panthers fought back when Alexander Dolder hit Donovan Mays for a 25-yard score and Cody Wulf tacked on a 1-yard dive for a 14-13 halftime edge.

It stayed that way until the fourth quarter, when Markale Martin scored on a TD scamper and Brayden Fogle’s two-point conversion run pushed Lex ahead 21-14 with nine minutes remaining. Camden Boozer’s 59-yard touchdown dash finished it.

Maumee’s Wulf ran for 164 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries. The Panthers finished the season 8-3.

Coach Andrew Saris will lead Lexington (6-5) into next week’s second-round game at fourth-seeded Rocky River (8-3). The Pirates thumped 13th-seeded Parma Heights Holy Name 34-14 on Friday night.

In recent action on Oct. 18, Maumee faced off against Fostoria and Lexington took on Mansfield Madison on Oct. 18 at Lexington High School.
