The Vermillion wrestling team took their 2024 out on a high note, placing ten wrestlers and earning a fifth place finish out of 20 competing teams at the Floyd Farron Wrestling Invitational, held Dec. 30 and 31 at Sioux Falls Lincoln.
Rollie French earned a first place finish in the 215 weight class and added 24.5 points in the victory. Michael Roob (157) and Padraig Fulton (165) each placed third in their weight classes, adding 19 and 18.5 points respectively.
Matt Roob (120) and Xavier Walker (150) each placed fourth while Landon Sopoci (126) came in fifth. Caleb Lara (175) earned seventh place and Braxton Beach (132) finished eight for the Tanagers.
In girlsâ action, Addison Green (120) and Blair Merkwan (185) each placed sixth in their weight classes, each adding nine points to the team score.
Following a good showing in Sioux Falls, Vermillion went 1-1 hosting their home triangular with Madison and Dell Rapids Tuesday, following its postponement in mid-December.
The Tanagers came out on top over Dell Rapids 56-22, with Colby Even (106), Rotavious Anderson (138), Michael Roob and Walker each winning by pin. Lara and French each won by technical fall and Beach won by major decision.
Matchups with the Madison team had a different fate for the wrestlers, ending the night with a 57-20 loss. French and Michael Roob each earned wins by pin. Fulton won by technical fall and Walker won by decision.
In the lone girlsâ match for the Tanagers, Blair Merkwan earned a win by pin over Dell Rapidsâ Josie Becker.
Next for the Tanager wrestlers is the Dan Pansch Invitational, set for Saturday at Brandon Valley High School with a start time of 9 a.m.
