Every month certain plants stand out and catch our attention including many late summer flowering perennials. Here are a few that have been delighting me in my own garden this year.
Ornamental grasses and asters begin to dominate the garden picture in late summer and if well chosen will continue to do so long into autumn.
One plant that never needs staking and is growing in an impossibly difficult site with very dry soil and next to a hedge is Verbesinia althernifolia. This odd looking plant is stiff, but the bunches of flowers that top each vertical stem stand out and proud. This plant has real character.
Autumn is clearly approaching and this filipendula, known as the Queen of the Prairie in North America, signals it clearly.
In summer this majestic plant was also a show stopper. Later, its fluffy, candy-floss, flowers age to a rich ginger hue that will remain a feature throughout summer and autumn.
