Jon Marshall is an industrial designer whose work fuses product design with strategy, branding, packaging and digital experiences. He joined Pentagram as a partner in April 2018.
He studied BA product design at Ravensbourne and then MA industrial design at the Royal College of Art, beginning his professional career working for Ross Lovegrove before moving to Pentagram, where he worked with Daniel Weil. In 2003 he joined Barber & Osgerby as Studio Director and developed some of the studio’s iconic furniture and product designs such as the De La Warr Pavilion Chair, Tab Lamp and the London Olympic Torch.
In 2012 he co-founded industrial design consultancy Map with Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby where he created products and user experiences for some of the most innovative and well-known companies in the world. Under Jon’s leadership, Map’s work won over 25 industry awards including D&AD, Design Week, Red Dot, German Design Award, Cannes Lions, Core77, Clios and The One Show.
Since becoming a partner at Pentagram, Jon has designed a diverse collection of products, packaging and experiences for startups to multinationals, across a wide range of industries.
These include a digital wallet for children’s cryptocurrency start-up Pigzbe designed to help children learn about money, and the intuitive Beeline Velo 2 cycle navigation computer. His multi-award-winning screen-free Yoto Player for children was honoured as one of TIME's 2020 Best Inventions, this was followed by the Yoto Mini in 2022, both products were category winners in the Design Week Awards.
Jon’s interest lies in working with abstract and emerging technologies, creating accessible user experiences and projects embracing sustainability.
He has developed industrial design language programmes for pioneering tech companies Graphcore, Quandela and Lightmatter, and was commissioned to create the reference design for an electric autonomous passenger vehicle for Goggo Network.
He designed an immersive exhibition experience for UNIQLO‘s LifeWear Day at Somerset House in London and developed the Huguet x Pentagram exhibition as part of the London Design Festival which also featured one of his designs.
He designed a range of plastic-free packaging for telecoms giant Verizon’s range of accessories, and sustainable, letterbox-friendly packaging for brain health and wellness startup Heights, which won a Pentawards gold award.
In 2022 Jon was commissioned by UEFA to design the trophy for its new European club football competition, the Europa Conference League.
Jon was listed as one of Creative Review’s top 50 creative leaders. He has served on the jury of numerous design awards including IDSA, D&AD, Design Week and Pentawards and he is a regular speaker at conferences and design events including Slush, PD&I, The Design Museum, The London Design Festival and Koorius Design Yaatra.
