Rangers, Kaapo Kakko agree to 1-year, $2.4 million extension
The Rangers and restricted free agent Kaapo Kakko agreed to a one-year, $2.4 million deal Thursday, the team announced.
Kakko, whom the Rangers drafted No. 2 in 2019, will be a restricted free agent again next summer.
The $2.4 million was the same amount as Kakko’s qualifying offer. That AAV deal brings cost certainty to the Rangers or any team interested in acquiring him via trade. The number is slightly less than what Evolving-Hockey projected for Kakko this summer — two years at $2.774 million AAV — but will allow him to negotiate a new deal again in a year.
