Key Aspects
Main Industries: Many of the early settlers were dairy farmers. As the land prospered, cheese factories, mills and other businesses formed along the County’s numerous rivers and streams. The ball-peen hammer originated at the Maydole Hammer factory back in the 1800’s. Chenango County is also the home of Pepto-Bismol, Chloraseptic and Borden’s Evaporated Milk.
Land: The rural character of the County is reflected in its land use. Approximately 30% of the land is devoted to agricultural use. Just over 60% is forested. Only about 5% of the county's total land area is developed in commercial, industrial or residential use.
Education: Morrisville State College has a branch in Norwich.
