FAYETTEVILLE -- Departing Mayor Lioneld Jordan chuckles when asked how he answers people who want to know how easy his job is in a growing city with a thriving economy.

"I'd tell them to follow me for a couple of days," he said.

His days typically begin at 4:30 a.m. and end with him going to bed at 11 p.m., Jordan said. He is blessed with a metabolism that lets him get by with only 5½ hours of sleep a night, he said. And his work week is typically six days -- often seven.

Beyond official duties -- overseeing staff and city finances -- he attends virtually anything in town where there is a crowd, Jordan says. His wife, Diana, teases Jordan that he would go to a hopscotch tournament if more than a few people attended.
