A network fabric built for Innovation

As data center fabric operators began to embrace NetOps, they found that existing data center fabric solutions could not easily meet their operational needs and often delayed the growth of automation.

Nokia recognized this gap and collaborated with leading hyperscalers and companies working to embrace DevOps approaches to find out more about their successes and challenges.

We applied these learnings to network operations with the goal of helping to drive NetOps automation in any environment. Our aim was to design a data center fabric solution from the ground up to provide the openness and extensibility that data center and cloud builders would need to thrive with NetOps.

We are known for our IP routing NOS, SR OS, which has a world-class pedigree of quality and reliability. Our team built SR Linux with this same commitment to quality and reliability.

The resulting solution combines our high-performance data center fabric switching platforms, the 7220 Interconnect Router (7220 IXR) and the 7250 Interconnect Routers (7250 IXR-6e/7250 IXR-10e), with a fully open and extensible NetOps-based network operating system (NOS) called SR Linux.

“SR Linux was built with a complete model-driven architecture across all its services allowing for rich telemetry, which is distributed through modern management protocols like gNMI. This makes things easier for our operational team to customize tools to meet our specific needs.”

CTO, OpenColo

How does IP routing enhance webscale services?

IP routing capabilities such as IP interconnection and IP peering connect your customers to networks, data centers, cloud services and applications across your cloud infrastructure regardless of their location. They enable the regional and global networks that connect and interconnect cloud data centers to exchange traffic in a scalable, secure and reliable way.

Our IP routing solutions enable IP network architectures that provide secure and reliable interconnection, peering and data center gateway functions and highly scalable, high-performance and efficient IP backbone routing. They let you deliver latency-sensitive applications at the edge, close to customers, while delivering latency-tolerant applications from the core.

Some of our recent innovations in routing include the Nokia FP5 6.0 Tb/s network processor, which sets a new standard in IP routing silicon design and powers the industry’s largest, highest-density and most advanced IP routers. With FP5 silicon comes 800GE routing, which offers a two- to eightfold increase in link capacity over current 400GE and 100GE networks, and effectively doubles interface capacity and connectivity in the same rack space.

Our routing solutions run on the Nokia Service Router Operating System (SR OS), which is built to power the most demanding, dynamic and reliable IP networks. This robust and scalable OS provides the foundation for the comprehensive Nokia IP routing portfolio and has been proven in more than 1,600 webscale, service provider and enterprise networks worldwide.

“Nokia has taken a leading role in developing the EVPN standards, delivering high performance capabilities on their hardware routers. In fact, in many areas, Nokia went beyond the standard and delivered enhanced capabilities which support operators like DE-CIX in running internet exchanges.”

CTO, DE-CIX

Optical DCI essential for webscale

Data centers provide the essential infrastructure for delivering the services and applications that digital economies and societies depend on. You data center networks must interconnect with each other and with internet exchanges and peering points to provide seamless and reliable global connectivity. These networks use optical DCI to connect with each other at a transport level. Optical data center interconnect solutions use coherent optics to capitalize on the enormous data-carrying potential of optical fiber to connect disparate data centers across metro, regional and intercontinental distances.

Nokia coherent transport solutions maximize the capacity and performance of optical DCI links and extend optical data center interconnect connectivity across long-haul and intercontinental distances. The sixth generation of the Nokia super-coherent Photonic Service Engine (PSE-6s) opens a new frontier in scalable, high-performance and power-efficient optical networking. PSE-6s technology delivers the industry’s first 2.4 Tb/s coherent transport solution. This solution enables you to scale transport capacity to unprecedented levels across metro, long-haul and subsea networks.

“Together Nokia and Eurofiber strive for net zero emissions in a 100 percent circular world. Through our collaboration, we want to achieve high service standards. With Nokia we have the scalability and flexibility to grow our network throughout Europe.”
Norion Wasch, Group Director
Procurement, Eurofiber

How is automation a game changer for webscale companies?

Cloud service providers need to manage ever-increasing network and operational complexity. As webscale companies try to automate their networks, they must often deploy multiple management solutions. This adds complexity, increases CAPEX and OPEX, and requires additional training and staff.

The Nokia Network Services Platform (NSP) makes it easy for you to abstract network complexity and diversity across multivendor, multi-domain networks that combine IP, MPLS and optical technologies.

You can also use NSP to keep up with fast-changing market demand by aligning your network offerings and service requirements. NSP offers a flexible, modular and programmable approach that responds to changing needs and demand patterns.

NSP enables you to get the most from your staff and network resources by providing a comprehensive management and automation platform that supports common tools and practices. By automating repetitive tasks and complex workflows, NSP eases the pressure on your skilled network operations staff and specialized networking tools.

“We do have automation tooling at LINX already and so Nokia came in and sat with our engineers and worked with us and adapted and built systems that worked with our systems.”
Richard Petrie
CTO, LINX

What is DDoS and why is it a threat for webscale companies?

Cloud service providers often offer internet interconnection points or interexchange points for regional and local traffic. Securing these midway points from DDoS attacks and other security breaches is essential. DDoS is outstripping gaming and video to become the fastest growing category of IP network traffic. New devices, including billions of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and high-bandwidth servers, are hijacked and used in conjunction with reflection, amplification and carpet-bombing techniques to launch increasingly sophisticated attacks.

We deliver the most robust and comprehensive protection scheme against all types of DDoS traffic with our FP5 silicon, which combines detection capabilities with advanced packet processing capabilities. With FP5, security is a high-performance, highly scalable function of the IP network. It is processed like packets are today, embedded as a function in the silicon.

Nokia Deepfield Defender complements this embedded IP network security by combining big data analytics tools with real-time network insights to provide an effective response to larger, more sophisticated and more frequent DDoS attacks. Webscale companies can use knowledge from Deepfield to create policies to identify and mitigate volumetric DDoS attacks.

Nokia 7750 Defender Mitigation System (DMS) is a new, dedicated next-generation DDoS mitigation platform that can be deployed with Deepfield Defender when third-party routers (with limited security filtering scale) are deployed or there is a preference by security teams toward a separate and dedicated security enforcement platform. In addition, DMS is ideally suited to replace legacy scrubbing solutions with a next-generation approach with higher throughput with better cost-efficiency.
