A day after introducing star outfielder Juan Soto — whose No. 22 they hope becomes part of New York Mets lore — the franchise is apparently planning to honor one of their legends in 2025.
Former third baseman David Wright’s No. 5 will never be worn again by the Mets, according to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo. Wright’s number will be retired and he will be inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame on July 19.
Wright, a seven-time All-Star, played his last game with the Mets during his age-35 season in 2018. He amassed 1,777 hits, 242 home runs, 970 RBIs and a .296/.376/.491 slash line in his career, which was worth 49.2 Baseball Reference WAR. He holds the franchise record for hits, doubles, walks, RBIs and runs scored.
Wright’s No. 5 will be the 10th number retired by the Mets, joining Darryl Strawberry (18), Dwight Gooden (16), Willie Mays (24), Keith Hernandez (17), Jerry Koosman (36), Mike Piazza (31), Jackie Robinson (42), Tom Seaver (41), Gil Hodges (14) and Casey Stengel (37).
