New Orleans: Several dead as vehicle ploughs into crowd

New Orleans, Louisiana, US – Authorities in the United States city of New Orleans have confirmed that ten people have died and 30 others have been injured after a vehicle ploughed into a crowd on Bourbon Street. The southern city had been celebrating the arrival of the New Year.

Officials announced the ‘mass casualty incident’ occurred at the intersection of Canal and Bourbon Streets in the French Quarter, a well-known tourist hub.

“There are 30 injured patients that have been transported by New Orleans Emergency Medical Services and 10 fatalities,” the city’s public alert system reported. A police spokesperson indicated that the act appeared to have been intentional.

The incident took place at approximately 3:15 a.m. local time, according to various sources. Bourbon Street, located in a city of around 360,000 people in the southern state of Louisiana, is famed for its vibrant nightlife and is a key part of the New Orleans tourist experience.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the motives behind the act.
