1.What is eSIM?

eSIM, or embedded sim, is a digital SIM card that is built directly into your device, such as a smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch. It eliminates the need for a physical SIM card and allows you to switch your number to a virtual SIM on selected handsets.

2.How does eSIM work?

Instead of using a physical SIM card, eSIM technology relies on a secure digital profile that is remotely provisioned onto your device by Mobitel. This eSIM profile contains the necessary information to connect to a mobile network.

3.What are the benefits of using eSIM?

  • Convenience: No need to physically insert or swap SIM cards. No more looking for an ejector tool or a paperclip to change SIMs.
  • Cross-Device Compatibility: eSIM can be used across a range of devices, this means each time you change your phone to another eSIM-enabled device you do not need a physical SIM card.
  • Multiple mobile numbers: on a single device, offering ultimate flexibility.
  • No Damages – avoid damages to the phone or SIM by trying to swap sim cards.

4.Which devices support eSIM?

Many modern smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and laptops support eSIM functionality.

Note: Please note that the below list is constantly expanding as more eSIM-compatible devices are released.

To use an eSIM, your device must be carrier-unlocked and eSIM-compatible.

5.How do I check if my device supports eSIM?

Dial *#06# on your phone, you will see an EID number, which means your device supports eSIM.

If you do not see an EID, this means your device does not support eSIM.

6.Will there be a fee for the eSIM?

Currently, our eSIM is part of a promotional offer. But there will be a charge for eSIM in the future.

7.How do I convert my physical SIM to an eSIM?

  • Follow the instructions below

Once you accept the T&C and click the “Convert to eSIM button”, we recommend you scan and set up the eSIM on your phone based on the instructions below.

Please note that your number is ready to be transferred to the eSIM after 30 minutes. And you will lose connectivity on your physical sim after this period. Hence, we recommend you to scan the QR code and set up the eSIM as soon as possible.

Scanning QR Code:

To carry out the below steps ensure that you have a WiFi or cellular data connection to complete this step on your smartphone.

Note for iPhone users: If you have an eSIM-only iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro model and you don’t have a WiFi network, Apple has a new solution to activate your eSIM: during the set-up process, you can choose to continue without WiFi. This allows you to set up your new eSIM without WiFi —at no cost to you.

Step 1:

You will receive an email that contains a PDF document that includes your QR code, you will be requested to enter a password to open the PDF, Please enter your NIC (National ID number) / Passport number to open the PDF document.

Step 2:

Option 1: Go to your device's settings, find the eSIM option, and scan the provided QR code.

Option 2: Open the device camera, scan the QR code, and follow the steps.

Step 3:

The eSIM profile will be downloaded on your device.

Note 1: Please be aware that after converting your number to an eSIM, SMS incoming services will not be accessible for 24 hours. This measure is in place to ensure the security of your mobile number during the transition process. It's a standard precaution taken by Mobitel to safeguard against any potential misuse of the SIM change service. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we prioritize the security of your account.

Note 2: Please do not select the 'Delete eSIM' or 'Erase eSIM' option in your device settings. On opting for these choices, your eSIM profile will get permanently deleted, and you will not be able to reuse the QR that was received in your email.

If it gets removed unknowingly or accidentally, visit your nearest SLTMobitel outlet to re-activate the QR.

8. Can I have my number on the eSIM and physical SIM card?

No, you can only have your number in one profile.

9. What happens if I lose my eSIM-enabled device?

You should contact 1717 immediately to report the loss and request for a temporary suspension of your number, thereafter, please visit the Mobitel outlet to activate your eSIM to the new phone (if it is compatible with eSIM).

10. Can I change my eSIM to another eSIM-supporting phone?

Yes, you can change your eSIM to another phone which supports the eSIM.

To change your eSIM to another eSIM-compatible device, you have to visit a Mobitel outlet.

11. What if my device is not eSIM compatible but I convert my physical SIM to eSIM DIY?

You will lose your connection on the physical SIM and since you do not have the option to enable eSIM on your phone you will not be able to use your phone. You will have to visit a Mobitel outlet to transfer your number back to your physical SIM.

12.I'm an Enterprise customer, Can I change my physical SIM to eSIM using DIY options?

You cannot switch your sim by yourself, please contact your account manager who will arrange for the transition on your behalf.
