A horror adaptation that has been dubbed one of the 'scariest and most intelligent' films by viewers is now available to stream for free - albeit only for a limited time.

Originally an Olivier-nominated London stage play before it was transferred to the big screen in 2017, Ghost Stories is a British horror film that is currently streaming on BBC iPlayer, but not for long.

While it has been added to the streaming service, at the time of writing it states that it is only watchable for the next 25 days, meaning it will be removed shortly after Halloween.

The film was written by League of Gentlemen member Jeremy Dyson and Derren Brown collaborator Andy Nyman.

Nyman also stars in the lead role, along with Martin Freeman, Paul Whitehouse, Alex Lawther, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.

The plot follows Phillip Goodman (played by Nyman), a professor of psychology, arch-skeptic and the one-man ‘belief buster’ having his resolve tested when he receives a letter apparently from beyond the grave with an unusual challenge.

His mentor Charles Cameron, a TV parapsychologist, went missing fifteen years before and is presumed dead, but writes to Goodman saying that the pair must meet.

Cameron, it seems, is still alive and needs Goodman to find a rational explanation for three stories that are too bizarre or chilling to be true.

As Goodman investigates, he meets three haunted people, each with a tale more frightening, uncanny and inexplicable than the last.

One viewer was thrilled after discovering the film on the BBC as they posted on X, formerly Twitter: "Just watched the best horror film I’ve ever seen. It’s the scariest and easily the most intelligent horror film ever. Honestly, if you watch until the end, it will absolutely blow your mind!"

Not alone in their praise of the film, as another fan posted online that they found it intense and unpredictable.

They said: "Intense film - great plot, real knuckle biting moments of fear. Refreshingly difficult to predict and while it didn't have a huge cast it felt like every actor had their part written especially for them." (sic)

Another added: "My partner isn't easily scared and they found parts of the film scary, so you know it's good. I spent 3/4 of the film behind my hands! If you are scared of the dark like me -the you will be terrified! "Interesting twist to the end! I found this film exceptional, well shot, well scripted!" (sic)

Ghost Stories is available to stream on BBC iPlayer until November 3.
