Around 50 homes have been evacuated after a bust water pipe flooded properties this morning.

The incident, which began around 4am, flooded multiple properties and affected main roads, and garages in the Popley area of Basingstoke. By 5.22am, Hampshire and Isle of Wight rescue services received multiple calls from Trinidad Close, reporting water was in properties. A water mains burst pipe has flooded around 50 homes in total.

A joint effort from police and crews, from Basingstoke led by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s emergency planning team, have safely evacuated all residents. The burst pipe also affected garages on Malta Close, as well as homes on Falkland Road. There is a large flood on nearby Carpenters Down Road.

The emergency planning committee are using Popley Fields Community Centre for all those evacuated and the local authority has started repairs on the burst water main. Firefighters left the scene and returned to station following the stop message at 08:26, the brigade said.

A Trinidad Close resident confirmed at 8.45am that the flooding had stopped. "It’s all cleared up", they said. "But there were a lot of houses affected."

In an emailed statement, South East Water Distribution Manager Gavin Jobling told the Mirror: “We are so sorry to residents in the Basingstoke area whose homes have experienced flooding this morning (Friday) following a burst water main on Popley Way. We’re working with affected homeowners to ensure their properties are made safe and any damage is repaired.

“We are sorry to customers who have experienced no water or low pressure due to the burst and we’re working hard to move water around our network to try and restore supplies to as many customers as we can. We will work to complete the repairs as quickly as possible and apologise to everyone affected by this.”

The incident comes after a burst water main affected properties in Basingstoke on December 4. It was thought that up to 100 people were affected after the mains burst in Ferguson Close in the Cranbourne area of the Hampshire town. During the incident three weeks ago, it took the water company around 30 minutes to fix the burst pipe.

At the time South East Water said: "We're really sorry to those of you who are experiencing low water pressure or no water at the moment. This has been caused by a burst main which we are trying to fix as quickly as we can."
