The Voice winner Jason 'Sundance' Head was airlifted to hospital after accidentally shooting himself on his ranch on Friday.

Sundance won season 11 of The Voice US in 2016, after getting to the semi-finals of the competition in 2007. The 46-year-old was rushed to hospital in Texas after the accident, having a lucky escape when the bullet missed his vital organs.

His wife Misty said it got lodged in a fatty area of his abdomen and he's in a stable condition while he recovers. She posted on the singer's Facebook account to update his fans after the incident, telling fans he is "grateful to be alive" and is now in good spirits, but "heavily medicated".

She wrote: "We have arrived at hospital and just now physically put my eyes on him and heard his sweet voice. He’s in good spirits considering the last several hours. Kids are in with him now. Prayers answered as no internal damage was done by the bullet. Thank you all for the prayers."

Explaining what happened, she told his 118k followers that he was hunting by himself while he waited for his friends to join him for the weekend. Misty wrote: "It was not his hunting rifle and no nobody shot him. He was out of the vehicle reaching in to grab his 22 when he grabbed it the 22 came out of its holster and hit the exterior of the Jeep just right and went off.

"Sundance said it happened so fast and he could see the bullet dislodging. I thought he called 911 he didn’t- he put his hands in pocket for phone immediately after getting hit but phone wasn’t there just filled with blood so he took off down the driveway out to the main road to flag a car down for help. 10 cars later someone turned around to help and called 911. Now this is what he has told me … he is heavily medicated at the moment. He’s so lucky and grateful to be alive. Thank you to the Good Samaritan who stopped and helped and the fast response by life flight and the doctors."

Misty went on to confirm that her husband will not require surgery, and that "him being on the bigger side" had worked in his favour.

Before Sundance's wife posted the update, Trey Newman, his agent, revealed to the New York Post that the country singer's wound "was not self-inflicted." He told the outlet: "It missed all vital organs. It was not self-inflicted. We don’t know if it was an accident with his gun or if it was another hunter nearby. The bullet is lodged in some fatty tissue, and the only way it could have have happened is if it travelled through something else."
