The cult adventure movie released in 1985 is still classed as one of the best ever by some and talk of a reunion set the excitement levels soaring. With production having been claimed to be ready to start as early as next year, it was thought years of speculation was finally coming to a head. However, in a devastating blow, actor Robert Davi, who played singing bad guy Jake Fratelli in the iconic film has confirmed there has been no confirmation - yet. Robert Davi, right, as Jake Fratelli ( Image: Warner Bros Pictures) Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, Robert, 73, sadly admitted his "intel" is that it's "not happening" but he questioned it the latest rumours started by someone who was "testing the waters". Robert, who has also starred in Die Hard and the James Band franchise told us: "Let me put it this way. I think it's just another rumour that has been going on for decades. We did get some word that it was not happening but, weâll see. I hate to let Goonies fans down, but the intel that I had is that it is not happening, but who knows?" When asked if he would be up for getting the old gang back together he said: "Oh, yeah! I think everybody would be [keen to reunite]. You know, Goonies was something that was wonderful, and we were all at different times thinking that there would be a sequel. Some of the fans want it, some of the fans donât. But I think we would all love to be involved if it happened." Robert Davi spoke of how any sequel would work following the death of Sloth actor, John Matuszak ( Image: Daily Record) He did, however, recognise that a lot of work would have to go into making it a success, claiming not many movies come back bigger and better than their original production. "You know, Hollywood does that [creates reboots] much the chagrin of a lot of fans. They don't want to see something that they love touched and then taint the initial taste. You know what I mean? There's always a danger in that when a sequel isn't as good as the original. "I think even the new Beetlejuice I'm hearing isn't as good as the first one. I don't know if that's true. Itâs a subjective thing." Despite his worries, he claimed it was possible for sequels to succeed and laid praise on the likes of the Harry Potter franchise - which, like the Goonies was also written by filmmaker Christopher Columbus. Robert believes the original cast would be keen for a sequel Some fans had questioned how any Goonies sequel could succeed without Sloth following the death of actor John Matuszak. But Robert was sure there are several opportunities they could explore. "There are two ways to handle it. Either, because Sloth had the makeup, you get someone to become Sloth, you know what I'm saying? That could absolutely work. The other thing is, in tribute to Sloth, there are many different ways that could be handled. He could have gotten plastic surgery extensively. Who knows? Or he could expire. "There are different ways that could be handled, but who knows what's best, he was such a loved character." Robert's extensive portfolio was enhanced earlier this year with a production close to his heart. The veteran actor portrayed Rafuel Lowy in Bardejov, a dramatic Second World War film inspired by a true story that focuses on Holocaust survivor Emil A. Fish's tale. The native of Bardejov in Slovakia was nine years old when he and his family in the region were sent to a concentration camp and the movie follows Robert's character. After the females in the area are ordered to be shipped to work in a shoe factory, the streets erupt with chaos and Lowy soon discovers there is no factory and the girls are actually being transported to Auschwitz. Lowy, with the help of other men in the village, is forced into desperate action as they try to save the girls.
