So… many… jellyfish. And they’re a nuisance to Georgia’s coastal fishing industry. What to do? #UGA food scientist Kevin E. Mis Solval came up with a brilliant solution: Use jellyfish collagen to create a line of cosmetics. He and graduate student Peter G. Chiarelli formed a company, JellyCoUSA; and GRA provided seed investment and guidance. Launched in 2021, the University of Georgia's Rural Engagement Workshop connects faculty research with communities in ways that go beyond traditional academic settings, helping scholars across disciplines see their work through a new lens. This year's cohort of 14 faculty members, from pharmacy and public health to veterinary medicine and engineering, are exploring how their research can address the complex needs of rural Georgians, from expanding access to precision medicine to scaling therapeutic horticulture programs in communities with higher rates of dementia. https://lnkd.in/dQzzkfyq | #UGAresearch

A record-breaking 937 undergraduates presented their research at the University of Georgia's 27th annual CURO Symposium last week at the Classic Center in downtown Athens — more than 200 students over last year's event. The students, pursuing 144 different majors, conducted research with 371 faculty members across 142 departments, with topics ranging from detecting canine heat stress through wearable technology to the role of memes in intellectual property law. https://lnkd.in/enZAVZ5z | #UGAresearch #innovation

From a rooftop garden that has fed Athens families for decades to a textile recycling program turning worn clothing into stadium seat cushions, the University of Georgia is using its own campus as a living laboratory for sustainability research. Faculty and students are working across disciplines — from food systems and plastics reduction to circular fashion and urban agriculture — to embed the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle into everyday campus life. Over 16 years, nearly 8,000 UGArden volunteers have harvested more than 120,000 pounds of produce, while Jenna Jambeck's Circularity Informatics Lab has conducted waste assessments in more than 60 cities across 16 countries. https://lnkd.in/eS3EvBDE | #UGAresaerch #innovation #sustainability

Raha Saremi, PhD, MBA, founder and CEO of Ecoatex, a startup spun out of UGA research, pitched and met one-on-one with investors, industry advisors, and other startup leaders at the annual Southeast Venture Showcase (SVS) in Nashville on Monday. The company is focused on turning renewable biomass, such as nutshells, into next-generation materials for textiles, healthcare, and sustainable products. SVS is a premier event for research universities and federal laboratories across the Southeast to present their most promising startups and technologies. Designed to accelerate commercialization, it helps early-stage companies connect with venture capital firms and investors to move discoveries from lab to market. #UGAresearch #innovation #sustainability #investors

UGA student researchers are turning scholarship into storytelling 📝✨ This year’s Libraries Undergraduate Research Award honored creative reflections on the research journey, from poems and interactive presentations to animation, comics, and video essays. Co-sponsored by UGA Libraries and the Office of Research, the awards celebrate emerging scholars and the many ways discovery can come to life. First place went to Raquel Beatriz Caldas Laranjeira for Turning Data into Light: A Research Journey, a poem.
