OTTAWA — It was an uncharacteristic start but a familiar finish for Ottawa-Glandorf in its 60-43 girls basketball win over Kenton on Thursday night.
O-G had nine turnovers in the first quarter and fell behind in the early going. But once it got the lead later in that quarter it never let it go on the way to its fourth win without a loss this season and its second win in the Western Buckeye League.
Karsyn Erford scored 19 points to lead four double-figure scorers for Ottawa-Glandorf. Alivia Grothause scored 11 points, Kaitlyn Kimmet had 10 points and 12 rebounds and Megan Horstman had 10 points.
Kyla Bostater, Sidney Payne and Brylee Bostelman each had nine points for Kenton.
“There were a lot of unforced turnovers. They threw something at us that nobody else has, a soft, spongey 1-2-2 (press) and we didn’t really know how to react to it. When we did break it, we threw it out of bounds. I thought the girls played a little more composed in the second half,” Ottawa-Glandorf coach Troy Yant said.
“I thought we took a pretty good hit from them. They were able to stay right with us. We weren’t able to get any fast break points, we weren’t able to get up and down the floor and run, which makes our game easier.
“For a while, it was a very physical game. I thought our girls responded to that. As it got a little more physical I think we played well. I thought the girls did a decent job of handling it in the third quarter, especially after things didn’t really go our way in the first half.
“Obviously, we need our seniors, we need our big three— Karsyn, Kaitlyn and Carlie — to step up and kind of guide us. We do have experience but we’re also young,” he said.
Ottoville picks up first PCL win
OTTOVILLE – Ottoville wants its defensive pressure to jump-start its offense.
In Thursday’s Putnam County League girls basketball game against visiting Miller City, Ottoville’s defensive pressure ignited the offense as the Big Green jumped out quickly on Miller City and never looked back, en route to a 54-29 victory over the Wildcats at L.W. Heckman Gymnasium.
Ottoville improved to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the PCL. Miller City slipped to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Ottoville led 13-6 at the end of the first quarter, then pulled out to a commanding 31-8 lead by the half. Miller City never fully recovered from Ottoville’s fast start.
“(Playing) defense is where we are going to hang our hats all year,” Ottoville coach Vaughn Horstman said. “We have shooters, but we need to force the pressure. To get the ball to the shooters, we have to press, press, press. … And the girls did a great job tonight.”
Brooklyn Koester led the Big Green with 16 points on 7 of 9 shooting from the field, including two 3-pointers. Koester also came away with three steals. Carly Thorbahn scored 12 points, including three 3-pointers. Thorbahn also had six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Kendall Schnipke added 10 points, four boards and two blocks. Erica Thorbahn added eight points for Ottoville.
“The girls are playing well,” Horstman said. “They are unselfish with each other. We’re getting the ball to where we need to. Kendall (Schnipke) could score for us. Then it might be Carly (Thorbahn), Erica (Thorbahn), or it might be Paige (Turnwald, two points), who is working her way back from an injury. Hopefully, it will get to the point where we’re playing 10 people. … We’re going to have to.”
Lou Michel was the lone Miller City player to score in double figures on Thursday with 13 points and five rebounds.
Ottoville shot 56 percent from the field, while Miller City connected on 26 percent of its field goal attempts.
“We were trying to contest the outside shot early, and then we tried to keep them out of the paint (as the game progressed),” Miller City coach Ross Heuerman said. “They hit a couple outside shots, and we had to go away from our game plan. We had a couple critical turnovers, and their lead went to 11 within the first couple of minutes (of the second quarter). We tried to claw back, but the pressure got to us. Then we had to switch up our defense. The way they move the ball, attack and hit the open shooters – it’s a lot to handle. It was a little bit too much for us in the first half.”
Fort Jennings flies by Leipsic
LEIPSIC – Fort Jennings girls basketball coach Sean O’Connor wanted his team to get out to a fast start in Tuesday’s Putnam County League matchup against Leipsic.
The Musketeers did just that.
Fort Jennings opened Tuesday’s game with a 15-2 run and never trailed, en route to a 47-41 victory at Leipsic.
“We wanted to start fast,” O’Connor said. “We knew our best offense was going to be our best defense. So, we wanted to start fast and press them. We wanted to force them to make mistakes, push the tempo and see what we could get out of it. I was really happy with how we started.”
Fort Jennings led 23-8 at the end of the first quarter, 30-20 at the half and 39-26 by the third stop.
Leipsic battled back in the fourth quarter but could not quite overcome the Musketeers’ fast start.
Senior Maggie Pothast, a 6-foot center for Fort Jennings (3-2, 1-1 PCL), led all scorers with 23 points. Pothast, an Ohio Northern University commit, also came away with 16 rebounds and four blocks. Autumn Calvelage scored 10 points, including three 3-pointers. Morgan Siefker had eight points, seven rebounds and four steals for the Musketeers.
“Maggie (Pothast) is the best big out there. That’s what we’ve been telling her,” O’Connor said. “She’s had a couple rough games. She’s a senior. She’s had a target on her in every game. We made some adjustments the last couple days of practice, so she could just unleash her will and make people get out of the way. It worked out really well for us today.”
Brooklyn Cunningham led Leipsic with 13 points. Jazelle Perez had 12 points, 11 rebounds and a block. Peyton Schroeder added nine points, five boards, five assists and five steals for the Vikings.
