OST Special Primary Results

PINE RIDGE – Because of a number of irregularities, the OST Election Commission conducted a Special Primary Election for tribal council candidates in Medicine Root, Wakpamni and Oglala/ Whiteclay districts on Thursday, October 17; in Medicine Root and Wakpamni districts, incumbent council representatives dominated the results.

In Wakpamni district, all incumbents were the top vote getters, Donroy Cubby Ghost Bear had 230, Jacqui Siers came in with 193 while Sonia Little Hawk Weston finished with 169. Those three incumbents along with the next three finishers move onto the General Election including Jane Little Hawk Rodríguez 116, Michael Carlow Sr. 110 and Reno Red Cloud with 85. The remaining candidates were John Long 79, Barbara Yellow Hair 62, Marcus Palmier 61, Vincent Two Lance Jr. 51 and Mason Big Crow 29. Ghost Bear was the top vote getter at, Wakpamni Cap, Wakpamni Lake and #4 Payabaya while Jacqui Siers topped in Calico and Batesland.

With 193 votes, Ryan Jumping Eagle Sr., a two time incumbent, was the top vote getter in Medicine Root district, new comer Jeremy Rosales was second with 181 while incumbent Austin Watkins Sr. was third with 104; the top six move onto the General and include Beau Little White Man 99, Tim Has No Horse 78 and Joseph Reddest 73. The remaining candidates included Gerald Cournoyer Jr. 68, Nicole Little White Man 61, Brett Hopkins 47 and Paul Kills in Water 29.

In Oglala/Whiteclay district, Troy Little topped all candidates with 134, past council representative Valerie Kills Small Janis was second with 122 while incumbent Wendell Youngman Jr. was third at 108, Lyle Weston was fourth with 87; the top four finishers move up to the General Election. Debra Mousseau topped the rest with 74, Patricia Mestaz 72, Anna Takes the Shield-Dubray 67 and Raine Little 47.

The OST General Election is set for Tuesday, November 5, polls open at 8am and close at 8pm. For information call 605 867-1379. There were three races that weren’t included in the Primary, Pass Creek district council race and the Vice President’s race will be part of the General Election while the two candidates Craig Dillon and Norman Standing Soldier in LaCreek will automatically earn tribal council seats being the only candidates running for council in LaCreek district.
