The 15th Korea-Japan Millennium Forum “Common Challenges and Opportunities: How can Leading Private Universities in Korea and Japan Contribute to the Sustainability of Global Society through Innovations?”

The Korea-Japan Millennium Forum is an annual joint forum established to strengthen the ties between four private universities in Japan and Korea, namely Keio University, Korea University, Waseda University, and Yonsei University. Keio University will host the 15th Korea-Japan Millennium Forum for which the theme will be “Common Challenges and Opportunities: How can Leading Private Universities in Korea and Japan Contribute to the Sustainability of Global Society through Innovations?”

13:00-14:00	Students Session “New Ideas for Social Innovation through Common Opportunities” Korea and Japan are both hosting the upcoming Olympic Games and Paralympic Games: the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeong Chang and the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo. These events are opportunities for young people to engage in social innovation, foster mutual friendships between Korea and Japan, and promote both countries globally. In this session, student representatives of each university are asked to propose to the presidents how they can use the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games as an opportunity to pursue social innovation and cross-cultural activities. 14:15-15:45	Researchers Session Part 1 “Political Elections and Societies in North-East Asia” Elections are an important component of democracies of Japan and Korea. Both countries have recently held a series of elections, but a deep skepticism toward elections and political parties seems to be prevailing. In this session, researchers from four universities will discuss how political elections have changed societies, the ways in which societies have reacted to elections, and the changing nature of elections. The results of these recent important elections in the two countries and the prospects of the coming presidential election in Korea will also be examined. 16:00-17:30	Researchers Session Part 2 “Consequences of Ageing Societies: Challenges and Opportunities” The population of Japan and Korea are rapidly ageing and recent biomedical research has been focusing on healthy ageing and major health challenges such as dementia. However, a super-ageing society requires solutions for many consequences affecting all aspects of society. For example, how can we sustain our social security programs? How can we can transform our society for a more age-friendly one? How can we safeguard investment of senior citizens with cognitive decline? The list of challenges grow, but on the opposite side of the coin, there are many opportunities to transform our society to become more inclusive, healthy, and affluent. In this session, four panelists present their own research and discuss how relevant research of the four universities can be synergized.
