MALTA: Buskett Gardens & Verdala Palace
BUSKETT GARDENS
The Buskett Gardens are located in the fertile valley of Wied Il-Luq, south of Rabat and east of Dingli. They are Malta's only large area of woodland.
It was planted by the Knights Hospitalier as a hunting ground. It lies next to Verdala Palace, in a valley, just inland from Dingli Cliffs.
Buskett has vineyards, oranges, olive and lemon groves, and is heavily wooded with native, hardy species such as Mediterranean pines.
VERDALA PALACE:
Verdala Palace is closed to the public but when they hold an Open Day (fund raising activity) the money collected is donated to the Malta Community Chest Fund.
Between 1557-1568, a hunting lodge was built by Grand Master la Valette. It was then replaced by Verdala Palace built by Grand Master Verdalle in 1586.

During British rule, it became a silk factory, but it was eventually abandoned and fell into a state of disrepair. Some repairs were undertaken during the governorship of Frederick Cavendish Ponsonby, and it was fully restored by Governor Sir William Reid in the 1850s. Prior to its restoration it was a temporal minor hospital between 1915 and 1916.It subsequently became the official summer residency of the Governors of Malta. It was included on the Antiquities List of 1925. On the outbreak of World War II in 1939, works of art from the National Museum were stored at the palace for safekeeping. The palace was restored in 1982 and began to be used to host visiting heads of state.

During the brief French rule, Verdala Palace served as a military prison for Napoleons troops.
Under the British rule, the Palace was used as a residence of the governors and today, it's the country residence of the President of Malta.
Grand Masters Lascaris-Castellar (1636-1657) and later Grand Master de Vilhena (1722-1736) contributed most to its embellishment. For some time the building also served as a silk factory after which it was abandoned and fell into disrepair.
