In 2024, Wharton continued to grow towards a prosperous future. Here are the stories that shaped the city last year.
On Jan. 8, Wharton City Council voted unanimously to annex 52,421 acres of land at the intersection of South Alabama and East Milam for the purpose of developing approximately 225 single-family homes in the Wharton Lakes neighborhood, marking the first major housing development in the city in years.
The development group, Wharton 55, is already looking at expanding to Phase 2 of the project, according to Wharton City Manager Joseph Pace.
New housing is a key piece for the city in its preparation for growth as I-69 makes its way towards Wharton.
The Colorado River levee project proceeded throughout the year after breaking ground in November 2023.
The first part of the project, which will be done in four phases, is currently scheduled for completion in March of this year.
Phase 2 of the project is almost finished with the design stage.
Wharton Regional Airport received several facelifts in 2024 including new LED lighting along the runway, maintenance shop and hangers.
In June, city council approved a multi-million-dollar runway rehabilitation project to be completed in 2026.
The city welcomed new voices in its leadership in 2024 including city councilman David Voulgaris in May, Chamber of Commerce president Karen Smith in July, Wharton ISD superintendent Olatunji Oduwole in August and Economic Development Corporation executive director Courtland Holman in September.
The subject of adopting zoning ordinances was brought before city council in September, as doing so would enable the city to apply for a $300,000 Resilient Communities Program grant from the Texas General Land Office.
No vote was taken at the time, but Pace was directed by the council to explore the possibility.
Wharton City Council will convene for the first time in 2025 on Monday, Jan. 13.
