Students have already completed their first two semesters of basic science instruction and now transition into the clinical aspect of their curriculum in the didactic setting before beginning their primary care clinical experiences under the supervision of physician and PA preceptors. Over the next 18 months, they will return to UND for several weeks at different junctures for continued education and training.

Foreign exchange students share food, traditions

VALLEY CITY — Recently an international potluck was held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Valley City hosted by Sharayah Robinson and Kyle Symanki. Three foreign exchange students with the American Insitute For Foreign Study shared food and holiday traditions of their countries, which are Germany, Mali, Africa, and Lithuania.

The students are enrolled in the Academic Year In American Program with AIFS, which is coordinated by Cathy Scott of Spiritwood.

The five students are Luisa Holtmann and Lea Wolff, both Germany, who are attending Valley City High School, and Grace Kamate, Mali, and Simona Palukenaite, Lithuania, who are attending Jamestown High School. Wolff, who is being hosted by Mellissa Bits and Jermey Guthmiller, and Chiara Zepner, Germany, hosted by Conan and Kelsey Hirch, were unable to attend the potluck.

Holtmann is being hosted by Robinson and Symanki. She said she celebrates holidays in Germany as she did in the U.S., except her family puts out their boots by the door for Saint Nick on the eve of Dec. 6 and she also celebrates her traditional Advent calendar.

Palukenaite, hosted by Leann and Kirk Ripplinger, said Christmas Eve is very important in Lithuania and the best time to see extended family. They have at least 12 different dishes without meat, with most having fish, mushrooms or poppy seeds. Traditional Christmas Eve dessert is tiny Christmas cakes with poppy seed eaten with poppy seed milk. On Christmas morning they open presents and at lunch have a meat dish such as chicken or duck. The second day of Christmas is a national holiday.

Kamate, who is being hosted by Ben and SP Rutabara, said in Mali Christmas is celebrated with immediate family. Sibblings come home with their children and there are lots of people in the house. They cook food from their country and give food to the neighbors and invite friends to their house. They eat, have special drinks, play music and go to church. Going out with friends on Christmas to greet some relatives is a traditional activity.

Academic Year In America is accepting host family applications now for the 2023-2024 school year and for the first semester of the that school year. Contact 1-800-322-4678, ext. 5169, Ashley Byrnes or Catherine Scott at 701-252-5764. Register online at www.academicyear.org to view available students and to fill out an application.
