Jamestown area students among nurse graduates

BOTTINEAU, N.D. — The nursing program at Dakota College at Bottineau pinned 37 Associate in Applied Science nurse graduates this spring from its programs located on the Minot, Valley City and Bottineau campuses.

The Dakota College at Bottineau’s practicum is a member of the Dakota Nursing Program, a consortium of four community college nursing departments that work together to offer a common curriculum for a Practical Nursing Certificate and an Associate in Applied Science in nursing. The program works to meet North Dakota’s growing need for nurses by providing these degree programs on the campuses of four two-year colleges and numerous satellite sites across the state.

There were seven graduates in the Bottineau class, 20 in the Minot class and 10 in the Valley City class. The program collaborates with medical centers across the state at which students gain practical experience.

Associate of Applied Science nurse graduates will be taking their National Council Licensure Examination exam to become licensed to begin their career as registered nurses.

Jamestown, Carrington students place in Prairie Public contest

FARGO – Prairie Public has announced the winners of its 2023 PBS KIDS Writers Contest. Two hundred and fifty-one local children submitted creative entries, and all received certificates of achievement.

Placing first from the Jamestown area were Raegan Harildstad of Carrington, in second grade with “Eva the Owl Fights the Darkness,” and Sam Schauer, grade three, with “Stuck in Space.”

Judges who evaluated the entries and chose the winners were library staff at the Fargo Public Library, and retired educators Marlys Davis and Julie Huebner.

The annual PBS Kids Writers Contest is an initiative designed to promote the advancement of children’s literacy skills through hands-on, active learning. The contest encourages children in grades K-3 to celebrate creativity by submitting their own original stories and illustrations.

Sixteen stories were chosen for first place and red ribbon favorite recognition, which are all available to read at prairiepublic.org .

Beyer, Wagner named to honors list

MADISON, S.D. – Jamestown area students were among those qualifying for the president’s academic honors list for the 2023 spring semester at Dakota State University in Madison.

Megan Beyer of Litcvhille and Scott Wagner of Monango were among the full-time students who achieved a grade point average of 3.5 to 4.0 to qualify for the honors list.

Ford named to dean’s list

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Meghan Ford of Jamestown was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Furman University, Greenville.

Furman's dean's list is composed of full-time undergraduate students who earn a grade point average of 3.4 or higher on a four-point system.

Dakota College announces academic honor lists

Dakota College at Bottineau announced Jamestown area students were named to the spring semester 2023 honor list and dean’s list.

Dean’s list students maintain a GPA of 3.5 and higher, and the honor roll recognizes students who have achieved a GPA of 3.0-3.49.

Heidebrink named to university list

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Curtiss Heidebrink of Jamestown has been named to Southern New Hampshire University's winter 2023 president's list. The winter terms run from January to May.

Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.700 and above for the reporting term are named to the president's list. Full-time status is achieved by earning 12 credits over each 16-week term or paired eight-week terms grouped in fall, winter/spring and summer.

UJ students receive awards at Honors Convocation

JAMESTOWN – The following students from the Jamestown area received awards during the University of Jamestown's Honors Convocation in April.

  • Shannon Bryn, Dazey, received the Richard Harrison Smith Choral Prize and the Dekrey Instrumental Music Award. The Richard Harrison Smith Choral Prize recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the choral program at the University of Jamestown. The Dekrey Instrumental Music Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the instrumental program at the university.
  • Nathan Cohen-Wallis, Jamestown, received the History Merit Award, given in recognition of superior academic performance and outstanding scholarly contributions in the fields of history and political science.
  • Marlie Desarmes, Jamestown, received the William J. Klaudt Award. The award, given in honor of Mr. William J. Klaudt, former professor and chair of the Department of Business Administration, is presented to a graduating senior for outstanding overall performance in the Department of Business, Accounting and Economics.
  • Delanie Finck, Marin Rasmussen, Mercedes Siek and Kyra Vogel, all Jamestown, received the Chapter AB PEO Award. The award is given to a female student or students with high potential who have graduated from Jamestown High School and have attended UJ for one, two or three semesters.
  • Zereta Gahner, Jamestown, received the Religion And Philosophy Department Prize.The Religion And Philosophy Department Prize is given in recognition of exemplary work in the department.
  • Anna Holen, LaMoure, received the Kennedy S. Wanner Memorial Trophy. The Kennedy S. Wanner Memorial Trophy was established by the brothers and sisters of Kennedy S. Wanner, a Jamestown College student killed in World War I. The selection is based on the student's scholastic record, participation in intercollegiate athletics, and high ideals.
  • MacKenzie Johnson, Jamestown, received the Faculty Recognition Award In Nursing, presented to senior UJ nursing students who have contributed the most effort to assist student learning within the nursing program.
  • Kelly McAlpine, Jamestown, received the The History Merit Award. The award is given in recognition of superior academic performance and outstanding scholarly contributions in the fields of history and political science.
  • Megan Moser, Medina, received the Outstanding Student In Elementary Education Award, presented to a student in the Teacher Education Department for outstanding achievement.
  • Keelie Renwick, Jamestown, received the Chapter K PEO Award. The Chapter K PEO Awards are given to two junior women and are based on character, scholarship and leadership.
  • Mason Rose, Carrington, received the Jimmie Zanni Award. given by the theater program to recognize students who epitomize versatility and quality in performance and technical theater.
  • Jaymee Weatherly, Jamestown, received the Richard Harrison Smith Choral Prize. Which recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the choral program at UJ.
  • Elliot Wiley, Montpelier, received the Communication Achievement Award. The award is given in recognition of high academic excellence in the field of communication, service to the college and the community, and leadership in the Communication Department.
  • Rachel Woodley, Jamestown, received the Clyde R. Travis Award. The Clyde R. Travis Award is presented to the junior student showing the greatest promise in teacher education. The award was founded by the class of 1926 in memory of Clyde R. Travis, former head of the Teacher Education Department.

Brianna Johnson graduates from university

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Brianna Nicole Johnson of Jamestown graduated on May 20 from Pacific University in Oregon with a Doctor of Optometry.

VCSU School of Education and Graduate Studies reaccredited

VALLEY CITY, N.D. – Valley City State University’s School of Education and Graduate Studies has been reaccredited through 2030 by the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

The accreditation process requires a comprehensive evaluation of the curriculum and field experiences. This includes reviewing the teaching and content knowledge, skills and dispositions for teacher candidates to successfully enter the profession.
VCSU demonstrated quality assurance and evidence that teacher candidates, completers and the teacher education program are meeting the state and CAEP standards.
The process included a self-study report from VCSU followed by feedback from the CAEP team and a virtual site visit by a CAEP team with representatives from five different states. VCSU successfully met each standard.
The next CAEP accreditation site visit will be during the 2029-2030 school year.

Northern State University releases spring dean’s list

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University in Aberdeen has released the dean’s list for the spring 2023 semester.

Grounds named to dean’s list

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – American International College student Aaron Grounds of Jamestown has earned dean's list honors for the spring 2023 semester.

Dean's list honors are awarded to full-time students who have achieved a 3.3 to 4.0 GPA.

Ripplinger named to dean’s list

ATCHISON, Kan. – Monica Ripplinger of Jamestown was recently named to the dean's list at Benedictine College for the spring semester which ended May 9.

Full-time students with 12 hours and a grade point average of 3.5 are named to the dean's list.

Meehl awarded scholarship

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Agtegra Cooperative has awarded scholarships to 10 high school seniors and two college students for the 2023-2024 school year.

The purpose of the scholarship program is to further the advancement of the agricultural

industry and the cooperative system through education while promoting academic excellence.

High school senior recipients will each receive $500 to be used toward a full-time undergraduate

agricultural degree program at a 2- or 4-year postsecondary institution located in South Dakota or North Dakota.

Two students from each of Agtegra’s regions were selected from a competitive pool of applications.

Awarded a scholarship from the Jamestown region was Samantha Meehl, Oakes.

WHITEWATER, Wis. – Theo Herzog from Valley City has made the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater dean's list for the 2023 spring semester.

Students on the dean’s list have demonstrated their academic abilities by receiving a grade point average of 3.4 or above in a single semester.

University of Mary announces dean’s list

BISMARCK — Area residents are among a record 940 students named to the 2023 Spring

Semester Dean’s List at the University of Mary, in Bismarck. This number includes students in

Mary’s undergraduate program and in adult education (University of Mary Online).

To qualify for the honor, traditional undergraduate students must earn a 3.50 or better grade

point average while carrying at least 12 credit hours.

Students enrolled in the UMary Online program must earn a 3.50 or better grade point average

while at a full-time adult learner status.
