Protect Customer Solar: No Sunshine Tax

MidAmerican Energy and their allies in the legislature want to stop Iowans from going solar.

The utility is attempting to monopolize the sun by squashing customer choice.

Iowa’s solar sector has grown as homeowners, businesses and farmers across the state have made private investments in solar in order to directly reduce their electricity bills with clean energy.

Now the company that claims a “100% Renewable Energy Vision” is making it quite clear that they don’t want any more Iowans contributing to that goal.

House File 669 / Senate File 583 will undermine net metering, a policy that allows customers with solar to be compensated for the electricity they add to the grid. By imposing needlessly high fees and fixed charges, the utility wants to dissuade new solar customers by ruining the economics of customer-owned solar.

New solar customers in both MidAmerican Energy and Alliant Energy territories will be subject to this 'Sunshine Tax.'

The monopoly utilities, which are guaranteed a profit, are trying to convince lawmakers and the public that customer-generated energy is a burden. The truth is that distributed solar more than pays for the infrastructure necessary to support it with the high-value electricity it provides to the grid.

Dear Representative, As your constituent, I am writing to ask that you oppose House File 669. This utility-backed bill is intended to ruin the economics of customer-owned solar installations. This bill proposal is not about fairness, it is about stopping Iowans from lowering their utility bills. Across the state, homeowners, businesses and farmers have made private investments in solar that reduce their operating costs with clean energy. HF 669 would set needlessly high fees and fixed charges on customers bringing new solar online. The monopoly utilities, which are guaranteed a profit, are trying to convince lawmakers and the public that customer-generated energy is a burden. Why should we take their word for it instead of first looking at the actual costs and benefits? Value of Solar studies commissioned in other states, like Minnesota, have shown that distributed solar more than pays for the infrastructure necessary to support it with the high-value electricity it provides to the grid. HSB 669 would stop Iowa's solar growth in its tracks and threaten the 800+ solar jobs across state. This proposal is anti-consumer choice and backwards looking. In states that have made similar moves, there has been a serious decline in the number of new solar installations. Less solar installations means less solar jobs. Please protect the ability of your constituents to control their operating costs. Iowa's clean energy future involves everyone, not just the utilities. Thank you,
