16 Fire Pits to Fit Into Your Landscape
A Warming Fire Keeps the Party Going Outdoors
I can shake my fist at gathering clouds or curse the wind for whipping my hair into a mess, but I've finally come to terms with the fact that it's not going to do one bit of good. Sadly, I can't change the weather. But what if I told you I could effectively double the amount of time you can spend outdoors with one simple solution? Here's how: Add a fire pit. Bam. Just like that, you no longer have to move indoors on chilly nights or forgo dinner alfresco because of a wayward cold front.
Gather around the fire and you and your guests will be able to relax outside well into the night without freezing your toes off. And better still, it's a built-in spot for impromptu s'mores, hot dogs and anything else you can roast over an open fire. If that's not incentive enough, how about no longer having to yell up at the sky for screwing things up again? Or maybe that's just me.

A long, rectangular fire pit butting up against a corner of banquette seating provides plenty of room for everyone to scoot in and get warm.
A round pit allows for plenty of chairs (like these modern Adirondack loungers) to pull up and get comfortable in.
Stone seats surround the blazing pit and stay perfectly in line with the retaining wall and exterior of this grand and glowing home.
When the sun starts to set, move from poolside to a nearby fire and get dry and toasty in no time.
Set up a little stopping point in the landscape for warming up and enjoying the view.
... Or enjoy the view right outside your back door, should you be lucky enough to have one.
This is not so much a "pit" as a fire bowl, which, when placed on a pedestal, bring the heat all little higher up — perfect for warming chilly hands.
Underlit benches create a bullseye around this fire, beckoning people down to meet at the center of the impeccably groomed backyard.
For smaller patios and decks, built-ins can be a blessing. A little space off the perimeter makes room for many more people than a pack of chairs would. After all, you can always squeeze another guest onto a bench; a lawn chair not so much.
There are a lot of places to keep warm on this deck, including right smack-dab in the middle of the table. Who needs a grill when you can flambe your food right from your seat?
This retaining wall makes itself extra useful by incorporating a bench and fire pit into its side.
I know where I'll be this summer! It'll be a steady trek from pool to hot tub, to fireside in pool and hot tub. Sigh.
This raised pit looks like just the right height for resting and warming your feet when you're seated in the low rocking chairs that surround it. The angle would tip you back just so for full outdoor relaxation.
Same goes for this more low-key setup.
Make for more ambiance with backlit walls glowing in moody tones.
