Marie Simmons Newitt
1944 – 2024
On Christmas Eve our angel on earth left to join the angels in heaven. Marie Simmons Newitt passed away in Provo, Utah December 24, 2024. Marie was born on March 1, 1944 in Provo, Utah, to William (Bill) and Clara Simmons. She grew up in Lake Shore learning to work hard and give service thru the example of her parents. She attended schools in Lake Shore and Spanish Fork and graduated from Spanish Fork High School in 1962. While in junior high school she started dating Duane Newitt. They have been happily married since being sealed for eternity in the Manti, Utah temple on February 1, 1963. Duane and Marie built their home in Lake Shore and lived most of their married life close to family and their many friends. She made their home a welcoming place where family loves to gather often.
Newly married she worked at Pacific States Pipe and three years later is when she started her fulltime life’s work as a devoted mother to her seven children. After her kids were in school she worked as a court clerk for the Circuit Court in Spanish Fork. A few years later she went to work at the Nebo School District Office and retired in 2014. Marie was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings throughout her life. After retiring she enjoyed working as a temple worker in the Payson temple until two months before her passing. She made lifelong friends at every step and dearly loved those she worked with. She was always known for being stylishly dressed and never having her beautiful black hair out of place.
She loved the sun and had many great memories of the trips to Lake Powell with family and friends. She made sure everyone was well fed on the many camping and cabin trips with family. She was always supportive and up to date on the many varied interests of her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her loving husband, Duane. Her children, Dayna Goates, Clint (Michelle) Newitt, Matt (Molly) Newitt, Sherri Newitt, Jill (Mark) Hansen, Amanda (Steve) Gren. She has 21 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Her siblings are Shirl Simmons and Helen Nielson. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Suzette, sister-in-law Joyce Simmons and brother-in-law Reid Nielson.
