Going along with the title, should Jets fans be concerned? I know it is week 1 but from this game, it is easy to say it looks like nothing has changed. We do have to keep in mind it is only week 1 and the 49ers are most likely the best team and defense we are going to play all season.
Discipline: We looked unprepared, very few players showed up last night. Penalties were another big factor, especially from the O-line. If we are "favored to win the AFC East" or "contenders" we better have some discipline. I personally think if we do not make a run this season, Saleh is gone. We need to hire someone with a winning culture.
The negatives: Defense. I know this is one of the best offensive lines in the league, but we cannot let Jordan Mason rush for 147 yards. That is unacceptable. The 49ers had a total of eight straight scoring drives while the offense failed to convert many times. Our safety group also played awful. Our corners did fine, but it was the safeties who let up too many deep balls— to not even the 49ers primary guys. We’re talking about fullback Kyle Juszczyk catching a 34-yard deep ball that gets the 49ers offense inside the 10-yard line. There are too many deep balls and open windows, which gives Purdy easy 20-yard completions.
The positives: One thing that did not change from last year is our elite cornerback core. Aiyuk was held to two receptions for 28 yards. Deebo Samuel had a better game than Aiyuk, but nothing crazy. Samuel had 5 receptions for 54 yards. Pretty solid for arguably one of the best wide receiver duos in the league. Breece Hall was doing Breece Hall things. He was one of the few Jets last night that I knew was going to have a good game. He was efficient both running-wise and receiving-wise. Hall put up a total of 93 scrimmage yards plus a touchdown. Someone who shocked me last night was Allen Lazard. Six receptions for 89 yards plus TWO touchdowns! I don't think anyone saw this coming at all. Hopefully he can work his way up to being one of the top receivers on this football team after a decline year last season, but so far he is off to a great start.
The takeaways: If I were to rate this performance, I would give it a reasonable 6.5/10. I know this is the defending NFC champions, but we have a great defense and should be able to compete for more with this team. We've just got to move on as we've got an easier Titans team awaiting. We have an easy schedule coming up after that as well. NYJ has their home opener against the Patriots in week 3, then a struggling Broncos team the week after that. In a good way, it feels better to have the biggest challenge of the year early. Overall mediocre performance, this team can most definitely do better.
