5G Networks: Understanding the 5G System as Flexible & Automated Software Network

Presenter: Dr. Marius Corici, Fraunhofer FOKUS, Germany

Currently the 5G system starts taking shape through comprehensive standardization and initial trials as to be able to meet the 2020 worldwide deployment date. This tutorial concentrates on the analysis of the current 5G system status of standardization as the basis for a highly flexible and automatic software network (customized for use case needs, parametrized for subscriber communication patterns, adaptable in real-time to communication needs, gaining insight from monitored data, etc.).

The full potential of the software networks is now beginning to take shape especially with the development of the 5G service-based architecture, the wide adoption of the edge deployments as a means to serve an optimized connectivity and the liberalization of the spectrum towards enabling the deployment of private, dedicated 5G networks.

This tutorial will address, in a coherent manner across the different domains, the flexibility and automation topic. After setting down the possible benefits of flexibility and its automation, a detailed impact on the different areas of the 5G system is provided including: radio technologies and spectrum allocation, edge and core network system deployments, backhaul and application integration. Following, an assessment of the 5G standards evolution is presented, especially concentrating on the opportunities arising beyond 3GPP Release 15 and the functionality existing and still required to support ultra-low latency and high reliability, low-cost and large coverage as well as mobile broadband scenarios.

Some important features that are being deployed in 5G networks, such as network slicing, C-RAN, dynamic functional splits, and edge computing, require novel architectures as well as new radio technologies, both in the transport and in the access network.

Moreover, the new requirements on 5G networks coming from different verticals and new services do have a significant impact on the needed performance of the wireless access links.

Based on requirements and architectural considerations of the transport and access network, this workshop highlights implications on the convergence of wired and wireless technologies. New developments of high capacity and low latency wireless links will be presented and evaluated.
