Feralpy is a month-long program curated by Jemila MacEwan and Amelia Heintzelman sharing the diverse practices of 40 artists through workshops, performances, film screenings, durational experiences and installations. This program unearths the myriad of ways that artists’ creative processes often serve as a therapeutic or healing practice for the artist, their community or society.
As a matter of personal and creative survival, these experimental forms of therapy are often born out of a need for distinct creative methods for working through the specific challenges of neuro-divergency, trauma, high-sensitivity, queerness and alienation which are common experiences for artists. These forms of therapy are rarely commodified in the wellness industrial complex and thus are invisible and inaccessible to many. In Feralpy we get curious about these free-range healing practices and invite artists to share them with a wider audience in an accessible, stigma-free, and donation-based format.

Curator Bios:
Jemila MacEwan has performed and exhibited internationally including at ARoS Museum (Denmark), The Australian Consulate-General (NYC), Pioneer Works (NYC), The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts (NYC), NYCXDESIGN, Skaftfell Center for Visual Art (Iceland) and The Castlemaine Arts Festival (Australia). In 2022 MacEwan was awarded the NYSCA/NYFA Fellowship in Architecture/Environmental Structures/Design, The BigCi Environmental Award and was invited to present as a Planetary Fellow for TEDxBoston. Notable residency invitations include; Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, BANFF Center for Arts and Creativity, NARS Foundation, and Ox-Bow School of Painting. Their work has been published in Art in America, Boston Globe, SFMoMA Open Space, MONDO Arc and Artist Profile Magazine. MacEwan has been generously supported by Foundation for Contemporary Arts, The Australia Council for the Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts, The Ian Potter Cultural Council, The Dame Joan Sutherland Fund, The Philip Hunter Fellowship and they received The 2020 Marten Bequest Traveling Scholarship.
Amelia Koper Heintzelman is a dancer interested in collectivity and co-authorship to deconstruct hierarchical practices in choreography. She has been awarded residencies at Chashama ChaNorth, The Croft, Chez Bushwick, and The School for Contemporary Dance and Thought in Northampton, MA. She has been a fellow at University Settlement Performance Project, and an Associate Artist studying under Deborah Hay at Atlantic Center for the Arts. Her work has been presented at Asia Society, Center for Performance Research, Lubov Gallery, Essex Flowers Gallery, and Pageant in NYC. She has toured to Fresh Festival in San Francisco, Junior High Gallery in Los Angeles, and to the David Owsley Art Museum at Ball State University. As a performer, she has had the honor of working with Phoebe Berglund, Juli Brandano, Ayano Elson, Sara Shelton Mann, and Alexa West, among others, and collaboratively with Leah Fournier. Amelia has taught masterclasses at Mt Holyoke College, Indiana University, Ball State University, University of Cincinnati, Landfalls Artist Residency, Pageant, and through the outdoor class series she facilitated called “Improv Club”. She teaches yoga and Comedy Pilates.
