I’m in something of a fog about the game this morning. It may be because I have a sinus infection (and hangover, I’m killing it today), but I don't remember anything of merit happening in the entire 90 minutes of this match. I think that’s because nothing did. Dortmund’s biggest events of the match in Augsburg were injuries and suspensions, not goals and celebrations. BVB were once again penned back by a mediocre side and made to look foolish on multiple occasions. Donyell Malen’s opening goal was well taken, but BVB managed to go downhill for all 85 minutes after his strike.
It’s hard to say what happens now for BVB. At the very least, we can try to vote for the best player from the match.
Donyell Malen
Malen’s goal was well placed, scooped around the Augsburg keeper and into the high corner. Malen was lively for the first 15 minutes or so but faded out of the game as BVB became less and less effective with the ball.
Serhou Guirassy
The Guinean has linked up with Malen twice now through a tremendous show of hold-up play. He received no service (none, zippo, zilch) for the remainder of the game.
Ramy Bensebaini
Ramy has come into my good graces lately for his committed performances and general ability to not draw attention to himself. When he was shifted inside, Kabar made Bensebaini’s left-back performance world-class, and then when Can joined the defense, Bensebaini was made to look like the best center-back in the world too.
To be honest folks, I cannot think of a fourth player to highlight from this match. I don’t really think there is one. Maybe one of the midfielders, but to say they were “good” would be an overstatement. If you feel so inclined, I’ve provided the option to vote for Cole Campbell, because ‘Murica.
