The Dredging Operations and Environmental Research (DOER) Program supports the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Operation and Maintenance Navigation Program. Research is designed to balance operational and environmental initiatives and to meet complex economic, engineering, and environmental challenges of dredging and disposal in support of the navigation mission. Research results will provide dredging project managers with knowledge and technology for cost-effective operation, evaluation or risks associated with management alternatives, and environmental compliance.

As an ORISE participant and under the guidance of a mentor, you will have the opportunity to hone their skills by collaborating on a wide array of tasks pertaining to government archaeology, such as, data collection and recovery, data management, lab analysis, report writing and document preparation for archaeological sites, compliance, and historic properties. The goal of the internship is primarily to provide you experience in a fast-paced environment; however, you may also have the opportunity to develop and carry out small-scale research projects depending on task load and interest.

Cats Optimizing Recycling Education (CORE) is a new project that expands Housing’s efforts to better understand recycling behavior on campus and maximize educational interventions. Reporting to Housing’s Senior Coordinator of Sustainability Operations and Initiatives and collaborating with a Graduate Assistant, the Student Recycling Specialist will play a large role in carrying out this project and combatting the issue of recycling contamination in the dorms.

This AmeriCorps member will play a key role in maintaining and expanding access to Native Seeds/SEARCH Free Seed Programs. The AmeriCorps member will also support community outreach and education efforts to include tabling, workshops, and educational material development in support of climate adapted agriculture and seed saving. Lastly, the member will support research and impact evaluations to better understand the role of community seed banks in seed and food security.

This position works with the Community Stewardship department and Tucson Clean and Beautiful, Inc. cultivating and coordinating Climate Action opportunities in high priority areas. This is an AmeriCorps position through Northern Arizona University.

The role of Environmental Education and Outreach Intern will be to engage the public in conversations and experiences that promote a greater understanding of and appreciation for the Sonoran Desert and highlight the impact of climate change and associated issues (e.g., invasive species) that threaten our community’s amazing biodiversity.
