Anti-drone shield to debut in 2026
The government aims to enhance national defense and address military housing shortages with new initiatives targeting completion by 2030.
Central to these efforts is an anti-aircraft and anti-drone defense system, expected to be operational by autumn 2026.
Preparations are under way to establish a unified command structure, while the selection of new systems will conclude by summer 2025.
The program forms part of broader modernization efforts for the Hellenic Armed Forces, including the construction of 4,000-5,000 housing units in island and border regions.
A recent Defense Ministry bill proposes leveraging military-owned real estate to meet housing needs. Service members will pay symbolic rents, significantly lower than market rates, to ensure affordability.
Some housing projects will arise from merging or closing existing military installations, while others will utilize poorly managed military real estate assets currently split across nine agencies.
The initiative envisions streamlining management through two new entities, aiming to boost revenue for the Armed Forces. Defense Minister Nikos Dendias has emphasized the dual focus on strengthening military capabilities and improving service member welfare, framing the initiatives as pivotal to the nation’s strategic priorities.
