Prometheas has set sail to Cyprus
Cyprus has taken a big step toward its energy future with the launch of the floating natural gas plant Prometheua from Shanghai. Cypriot government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis announced the news, confirming that Prometheus departed at 1.30 a.m. Greece and Cyprus time on Saturday and has already sailed beyond China’s territorial waters.
“This marks the beginning of a new energy era for our country,” Letymbiotis said in a social media post. He emphasized that energy autonomy and cheaper energy for citizens are at the heart of Cyprus’ energy plans. He also highlighted the importance of careful planning, dedication, and perseverance in moving forward.
Before Prometheas can serve Cyprus, it will make a stop to be certified as a floating gasification plant. According to Energy Minister George Papanastasiou, discussions are already under way to determine how Prometheas can be put to use in other locations until the infrastructure at Vasilikos is ready to receive it.
This move constitutes a promising sign and brings Cyprus closer to reducing its reliance on expensive energy sources and securing more affordable energy for its people.
