A ground-breaking contraceptive pill for men could be just around the corner after a major genetic breakthrough. Scientists at Washington State University have identified a gene which temporarily renders sperm infertile after they remove it.\r

The research team discovered a protein encoded by this gene, found solely in the testicular tissue of most mammals, which reduced sperm counts and deformed remaining sperm to make them incapable of fertilizing an egg when altered. The potentially historic breakthrough contraceptive pill would also have no hormonal side-effects and could be additionally help control animal overpopulation — replacing castration.\r

Crucially, the destabilization of the infertility protein is not permanent, meaning sperm will recover once the person or animal stops taking the treatment. Scientists have hailed the discovery as potentially important for the future of the human race. In their study, researchers identified the expression of a gene called Arrdc5 in the testicular tissue of mice, pigs, cattle, and humans.\r

Abstract\r
Nearly half of all pregnancies are unintended; thus, existing family planning options are inadequate. For men, the only choices are condoms and vasectomy, and most current efforts to develop new contraceptives for men impact sperm development, meaning that contraception requires months of continuous pretreatment. Here, we provide proof-of-concept for an innovative strategy for on-demand contraception, where a man would take a birth control pill shortly before sex, only as needed. Soluble adenylyl cyclase (sAC) is essential for sperm motility and maturation. We show a single dose of a safe, acutely-acting sAC inhibitor with long residence time renders male mice temporarily infertile. Mice exhibit normal mating behavior, and full fertility returns the next day. These studies define sAC inhibitors as leads for on-demand contraceptives for men, and they provide in vivo proof-of-concept for previously untested paradigms in contraception; on-demand contraception after just a single dose and pharmacological contraception for men.\r

Gee, this seems so fair.....

This a male dominated planet and nothing will change thousands of years of male domination in every society and culture. "Man" should not be in the word "human" since they act like animals, thinking with the "brain" in their pants, not their heads.

Show me the packet of your pills so I can check you took yours, then I can show you mine!

Hopefully, each male pill will also contain a testosterone inhibitor. Just to give the ladies a rest from their 'duties'.

Too much indiscriminate bonking and breeding on this planet as it is.

Over the years I've heard MANY female friends complain about the LACK of sex in their relationships. Even when I was younger. Look at the numbers; the average number of times most couples have sex these days is only weekly.
But men could help things if they actually paid attention to what women LIKE

our parents or grandparents generation bred their brains out after the women who had kept the war effort going, built planes, tanks, kept the home fires going, the victory gardens growing...were kicked off their jobs and turned into broodmares.

that the pill prescribed to women was originally created for men but they couldn't take the discomfort of the side effects, so guess what? Put the bullshit on us and all the responsibility, stigma, and pain that goes with it.

I wonder if they will find a way to combine it with Viagra? You know, for their convenience so they don't have to worry about remembering to take two pills.
