Which denomination, and which breakaway from that denomination denomination, ad nauseam.

Goes the same for Bibles. There are SO many with even more 'interpretations'. This is a can of worms that needs to stay sealed.

European countries were at war with each other almost constantly for at least a thousand years, and why the founders added freedom of and from religion to the Constitution. The Thirty Years' War, the result of conflicts arising from the Reformation, had ended about 150 years before the Constitution was written - only as long past as the US Civil War is from the present time. It was one of the most destructive wars ever, and it would not have been ancient history in 1789. Of course they were also very much aware of the religious upheavals within England - including the malign doings of the Courts of High Commission. They didn't want religion of any flavor involved in government because they knew exactly what would inevitably result.
