As the UK battles with snow, rain and wind this week, the idea of a sunny escape is likely very appealing. However, after the financial hit of Christmas and New Year celebrations, you might be on a tight budget for your sunshine getaway.

Fear not, there's a stunning region in Portugal that offers lush rainforests and summer-like temperatures, and you can fly there for less than £100 this month. São Vicente, located in the expansive Laurissilva area, is renowned for its valleys, vineyards, lush vegetation, volcanic caves, and charming villages.

It's situated in one of Madeira's most mountainous regions and extends to the Atlantic Ocean via a series of winding roads. The town centre of São Vicente is beautifully preserved, with centuries-old cobbled streets lined with cafes and bars perfect for enjoying a drink in the midwinter sun.

At the village entrance, nestled into the rock, is the Capelinha do Calhau, a small chapel built by villagers in 1692 and dedicated to Saint Vincent, believed to protect them from the harsh ocean. The baroque facade is carved into a solitary basalt rock and features a mosaic made from riverbed stones.

In addition to its beautiful streets and churches, São Vicente also boasts ancient volcanic caves formed during an eruption 890,000 years ago. Unfortunately, following an earthquake in 2020 and the Covid-19 pandemic, the caves have been closed to the public and are yet to reopen, reports the Express.

However, a museum on the site remains open for visitors to learn more about these unique geological formations.

São Vicente, a haven for nature enthusiasts, is renowned for its Indigenous Garden. This subtropical expanse, spanning approximately 1,500 square-metres, is primarily dedicated to the island's native flora.

It's an idyllic spot for a leisurely afternoon walk, allowing visitors to appreciate the stunning natural surroundings at their own pace. With January temperatures averaging around 19C, it offers a welcome respite from the UK's winter gloom.

For those keen on planning a trip, Skyscanner currently has mid-January flights to Madeira on offer for just £81 one-way or £163 return.
