The Belcea Quartet, top, and Ébène Quartet, bottom, will perform Sunday, Nov. 17 at Union College's Memorial Chapel.

SCHENECTADY — Capital Region Classical will present the Belcea Quartet and Ébène Quartet on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Union College’s Memorial Chapel.

The program features:

  • Mendelssohn: E-flat major Octet, Op. 20
  • Enescu: C-major Octet, Op. 7

The Belcea Quartet and Ébène Quartet will together perform beloved masterworks of the chamber music repertoire. Currently sharing a quartet series at the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Belcea and Ébène are both internationally renowned and audience favorites.

The Belcea Quartet is lauded for its passion and precision. Their wide-ranging discography includes recordings of the complete quartets of Bartok, Beethoven, Brahms (Diapason D’or, 2016) and Britten. They were ensemble in residence at Pierre Boulez Hall in Berlin from 2017 to 2020, performing there regularly as well as at esteemed venues worldwide including Carnegie Hall. Their foundation, the Belcea Quartet Trust, aims to broaden the string quartet repertoire through commissioning new works and supporting and coaching young quartets.

The Ébène Quartet’s multi-award-winning discography includes recordings of Bartók, Beethoven, Debussy, Haydn, Fauré and the Mendelssohn siblings, as well as improvisations on jazz standards and pop. Their most recent albums are a 2023 recording of Mozart’s K 515 and 516 quartets, and their 2024 recording “Waves” featuring electronic sound artist Xavier Tribolet. They are Radio France’s Quatuor en résidence and were appointed by the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich to establish the “Quatuor Ébène Academy.”

Individual tickets are $40. All children and students are free. For information, call 518-941-4331 or visit capitalregionclassical.org.
