You came all the way from Georgia?
Yeah, I went to the Mohan Matchmaking convention in Chicago last year. I follow Anip, the founder, on Instagram, and he had put out a little PSA about it. I was like, “Well, I’m single as ever, so I guess I should go.”
Do you often travel for dates?
I do. I try to keep it in America, mostly. I go back to New York a lot to date. I’ve done the “whole day on the West Coast” thing — S.F., L.A. I haven’t had as much success dating in Atlanta. I think I vibe more with the Northeast city folks. The Atlanta people are a little on the slower side in their tempo of life. Just a little on the slower speed in general. So even though this is expensive — $685 — it’s much more convenient. I can meet 50 people in one weekend and at least decide whether they’re in the “yes” or the “no” pile. For me, that’s more worth it than having to go on 50 first dates.

If you’re still looking for a partner next year, would you go again?
I think I would do a cost-benefit analysis. I do think the quality of people you meet is high, and I don’t think I would’ve met this many people on the apps. So if it were easy to get to, then yes, I would.

Speed dating sounds like it’s overwhelming.
It is. There were people I wanted to give energy to but couldn’t because I’m tired. Even though we could have had something, I’m tired and I can’t be there the way I want to. I’m going to need three days after this to relax.

Been on any bad dates recently?
I had drinks a few months ago with someone I’d met on Hinge. We were just chitchatting, and this guy walks by and it turned out they knew each other. I was like, “Hey, how do you guys know each other?” And he said, “Oh, we’ve been dating for five years.” At which point I found out they were ENM and were just trying to take me home with them.

Did you meet anyone special?
One guy at the after-party, when “Let Me Love You,” by Mario, was playing, did not break eye contact and sang the whole song to me. He came up to me later and was like, “I know why you look so familiar.” He scrolled to the bottom of his Hinge and there we were — matched. It was crazy.
